I had to purchase this play for school, and I really ended up enjoying it. I laughed, I almost teared up at a couple points, it kept my interest/attention the entire time, and most importantly-I bought it: I bought the story and the characters. It all was very authentic and well written.It honestly left me wanting more by the end of it.Like...Omari, how you doing now, man?!?I got attached to all of the characters REAL quick—a pretty impressive feat for only 90 pages.
I saw the play and my son loved one of the monologues and wanted the script.
This story does a great job of telling of the discrimination black students, especially men, face in public spaces. The use of the poem was what hit me most because that is a fear amongst all black parents - "we die soon'. Very nice, extremely powerful, especially the final three pages.
4.5 starsI stopped teaching high school English in 2009 (I taught in the biggest HS in America for three years). Ten years later, I read this today and thought about how I would love to teach this at that school. The issues and the dialogue are accurate and speak to the issues of our times. Ms. Morriseau adroitly weaves in "Native Son" and "We Real Cool" into the story as essential plot devices that add to the understanding of the issues.Nya fears for her son. Too black? Too angry? Too pushed? Her speech in the middle of the play is fantastic. Her son's speech near the end is instructional for parents, teachers, cops, and therapists.
I saw the play in August 2018 in NYC. It was an amazing script with amazing performers. Two nights later I saw "Dear Evan Hansen" which was really good but I thought "Pipeline" was more powerful.
