For so many years now I have been amazed at the power we have to heal ourselves. Especially after witnessing my husband heal himself from a C5 fracture in 5 different places. The doctors said he would never walk again! He sure proved them wrong! I witnessed every day in the hospital how my husband Rafael would go into silence for hours at a time and didn't know what he was doing. Not until years after did he share how he would go into his body and talk to his bones, neck and brought even helpers inside of his mind to help him heal. And so it was! He not only healed himself completely, but even doctors today can't even see his fracture since he was so precise in what he wanted for himself. So thank Dr. Joe Dispenza for sharing with the World your words of wisdom and that through science as well, you are able to explain how each and every one of us can change our lives instantly! All we have to do is have the courage, strength, focus and determination to make it happen. We are all of course, super natural beings and it is time we take control of our lives and stop blaming others for our lives!

Becoming Supernatural: How Common People Are Doing the Uncommon, by Dr. Joe Dispenza, can place you on the path of transforming your future - in the present. This is a time in history when it's not enough to know - this is a time in history to know how...Dr. Joe Dispenza.Right now - in the present - is the only time we have. The past and the future are of value only in so far as they enable us to make the changes needed to get where we want to be(come). If you want to live a more powerful life that is not simply a replay of your past beliefs and habits and is willing to take some reasonable steps to get there, then you need to read Supernatural: How Common People Are Doing the Uncommon. It's been almost four years since Dr. Joe's last book, You are the Placebo. Fully 93% of those who wrote an Amazon review has rated it as a 4 or 5. My own review is one of those, which I'm proud to say is currently ranked #1 of the more than 700 so listed.Given that Dr. Joe literally saved my life several years ago when he was still working full-time at his chiropractic practice, it's a small repayment. For several weeks, I suffered incredible non-stop pain from a ruptured disc. The region's top surgeon opined that "Your only option is spinal fusion." Dr. Joe disagreed. With his bodywork, meditative teachings, and encouragement, along with training suggestions from Professor Bradley Steiner, my martial arts instructor of 30 years, I was able to cheat the hangman as my disc repaired itself.Several years of quantitative analyses on students in his Advanced 4-day workshops in many venues, literally around the globe have led to this, his latest book. Confirmation of the model came from analyzing and measuring brain waves/scans, neurotransmitters, and heart coherence, as well as internal and external energy levels. He concludes, "We now have data from common people, just like you and I, so that once they understand what they're doing and why they're doing it, (practicing and implementing) the 'how' gets easier." You can "tune in to frequencies beyond your material world" by breaking habits of the old self and creating a new one.Paying attention is being present. We spend the majority of our time either living by past emotions/habits or anticipating the future overlain with the old guideposts. When we get there, that past is recycled into the same behaviors, and nothing really changes.Eastern mystics and religious leaders have advanced the practice of "being present". But this powerful concept doesn't keep us from dredging up past behaviors and replicating them, if not in the present, then certainly in the future, when we invariably "fall out of being present". You are the Placebo, now reinforced "on the proof side" with an additional four years of scientific, measurable, objective data as recounted in Supernatural, clears the decks. Common people just like us can now see how to go about becoming uncommon, and capable of achieving benefits on the scale of those who have led the way.Understand that your thoughts create your life. Accept that if you keep thinking the same way, you'll have the same (unsatisfactory?) experience, the same mental anguish, the same untoward physical response. In any skill set - martial arts, mountain climbing, driving a car, you're going to respond in the event the same way you train. Without a change, won't your future be just like your past, since those habits are still the drivers of that future? You may not have attended a conference. But as my Canadian friends like to say, "No worries!" Don't hesitate. Read Supernatural and see how all the evidence indicates that effecting change is much less complicated than you might imagine. Also, read You Are the Placebo, then get to work following the trail Dr. Joe has blazed, and which is now being successfully traversed by so many others just like you.A few things help me stay on the path. When negative self-talk crops up, I quickly defuse its effect by simply thinking "Release". You might visualize the idea sailing away or disintegrating - before it can become a feeling, followed closely by a physical sensation of tension, anger or depression. Even if it persists for a while, it seems to have been stripped of its power to bother me. Soon, I get up and do something as it fades away, having deprogrammed my subconscious one more time.Second, find a couple of things each day for which to be grateful. Try to choose something you'd like which has not yet taken place. The powerful act of expressing gratitude before it happens is an element in creating the future you wish to experience. Dr. Joe is the only person I've ever met who suggested this...and it works!Third, certain words or phrases can be highly emotive. Before arising each morning, I state silently, "I approach this day with Gratitude, Respect, Observation, and Wisdom (GROW)."Finally, release these thoughts into the Quantum Field, asking that they are organized in a helpful way; that they are returned in an unexpected, powerful, and positive manner.Dr. Joe states, "The only way to become "supernatural" is we have to start doing what feels unnatural - then keep doing it over and over again. We can create better lives for ourselves. In fact, each of us possesses the anatomy, chemistry, and physiology needed to become supernatural—it’s merely a matter of awakening it and activating it."As you reflect upon and practice what Dr. Joe teaches in his seminars around the globe and now, in his fourth book, Supernatural: How Common People Are Doing the Uncommon, you will be acquiring the tools necessary to build an exceptional future before it even arrives! Better able to regulate your internal state regardless of what's going on in the outside world. Your behavior will more closely align with your intentions. You'll be more attached to the future-present than your past-present. As your thoughts and actions begin to mesh, what's unnatural will become supernatural. I am grateful that these elements are at work in my own life. They can help transform yours as well!

Honestly confused how a new published book can get this many positive reviews in such a short time. I did not do any of the exercises yet, and it still took me over 3 weeks to finish it.There are couple of things that bother me. Yes the meditations are explained but not fully. You need to buy all these different CD's or download them to get the full picture. He also tries to convince his readers to take his classes, and even better if you take 3 classes. Also to benefit from the Meditation CD's he mentions, you also need to buy his previous book "Breaking the Habit of being Yourself". And guess what? When you go over the suggested chapters 9-13, you realize that you better pay for additional Meditation CD's. Still overall I found the info interesting and believe it can work if you become dedicated like a Buddhist Monk. I will definitely not take his classes, but will get the CD's (Probably around $200 additional cost). Later will edit my review based on my own personal experience.

I have read three of his earlier books and attended Dr. Joe's workshop and while I greatly appreciate all the science, references to research by others, etc. I found this book a bit of a disappointment. The first half (some 150 pages) is spent on previous works. I suppose as a stand-alone he would have to get first-time readers up to speed, however, it would seem this could be done more effectively by putting those explanations, graphics, charts etc in an addendum and referring readers there. The latter half of the book gets to the 'new' work, and I love that he discusses hard brain science and discoveries in quantum science, yet I had hoped for a deeper exploration of consciousness and the brain-heart connection.Another problem I find with all his work, the book was billed as a step-by-step guide but as with all of his earlier work, he refers to an 'elevated emotion' without ever describing how to tap into it. One doesn't just sit down, close their eyes and find joy and love and harmony.

I am writing this primarily as a response to Dave Teague's one-star review. I do not want his review to prejudice people from considering this product.First of all, I would describe this as a "moderate evangelical" study Bible. By "moderate," I mean somewhere between conservative and liberal, not fitting comfortably with either. On occasion, however, Dobson definitely tilts in a progressive direction. While he does not explicitly affirm homosexual unions, he indicates (in Leviticus 18 and Romans 1, for example) that the homosexual practices are probably abusive or involving cultic prostitution. Obviously, that leaves open the door for those who want to affirm gay marriage in the church. Buyers should also be aware that Dobson prefers to leave things "in tension" (as he likes to say), often giving multiple interpretative options. I am not always a fan of Dobson's notes. Teague's review, however, does a disservice to this Bible. Here are my replies to each of his complaints:The study notes do not imply that YHWH and Elohim are two different gods, much less do they support any sort of Gnostic demiurge. The footnote for Gen 2:4 clearly indicates that we are dealing with different ways to understand the character and personality of God. Every scholar, including the vast majority of evangelicals, recognize that the texts which use Yahweh are more "immanent" in their understanding of God and his agency, whereas the Elohim texts are more "transcendent." Since God is both immanent and transcendent, this variety in the traditions is appropriate and should hardly cause concern for any believer. Moreover, there is overlap, and no one believes that these are strictly segregated in the Hebrew Bible (Protestant OT). Most of the more liberal scholars will use these differences as a basis for widely differing theologies (and textual traditions), but Dobson does not go there...thankfully.As for Gen 4:1, the note does not casually "mention" that Eve had sex with either the serpent or a fallen angel. It states that, "Ancient interpreters tried to explain this phrase by positing that...," which he footnotes with a citation. Of course, Teague wants an explicit rebuttal, but Dobson was merely indicating what an ancient interpretive tradition believed as he does throughout (Rabbinic, for instance), which is the whole point of this study Bible. He is not endorsing the interpretation, nor is he stating that we should endorse it.As for Deut 4:35, how on earth does "monotheism is born" suggest that it was "just an idea that someone invented"? Seriously. The text is clearly a proclamation from Moses, predicated on the prior revelation to Israel of the one and only true God.And, lastly, I highly doubt that Dobson believes that first-century interpretations are "more correct simply because they come from the time of the New Testament." But he does believe that it is helpful to know what these interpretations were, as we engage in dialogue with them in order to interpret the text. I think that the speculative interpretation at Gen 4:1 is wrong, but I am glad to know what an ancient interpretive tradition believed. Moreover, the title "first-century" is a bit of a misnomer, because the interpretations come from both early church and Rabbinical traditions that post-date the first-century. That is my one quibble with this study Bible. Otherwise, I am highly impressed by the quality of the scholarship. No study Bible is without faults, but I think this is a worthwhile contribution to one's Bible collection.

This is insightful and inspiring. The articles and notes are helpful, scholarly, and culturally relevant. The Kindle Version is easy to use but if you follow too many links or references, you have to return to the table of contents to find your way back to the original text. I find myself wanting the paper version due to that fact.

This book is not bad, but it is not very good compared to so many other study Bibles. Most other popular study bibles are written by a team of scholars, but this is written by just one person with an MA. The notes are ok, but quite weak compared to the ESV Study Bible or the Zondervan NIV Study Bible, for example. If you're looking for history, try the Archaeology Study Bible. I can't think of a good reason why someone would use this Bible on a regular basis when there are so many better alternatives.

I have many types of Study Bibles, but nothing like the NIV First-Century Study Bible. The study notes coincide within the early context of the Scriptures. In other words, when reading a particular verses or chapter, the study notes stay within the context of that verse or chapter. The maps are also helpful when I need a view a particular area in the Scriptures. The only downside to this Bible is the print size and font type. I wish it were a little larger and clearer. Othet than that, I enjoy using this Bible and I will continue to use it was a part of my study time.

I wanted to obtain a more modern study bible for my Samsung android and this pretty much fills the bill. The ebook is sometimes a little clunky to use, and it does not include the Apocrypha. It is well researched and you do not have to be Evangelical to appreciate it.

I like the various study Bibles, with the emphasis on different things in the notes. Context is everything in Bible study, and having notes relating to first century life is a great addition to my Bible library.

The study notes are very well written with colored pictures, maps, historical and archeological notes, Hebrew/Greek word study, cultural background throughout. I absolutely love the 1st Century Jewish/Hebraic/Christian perspective. I have purchased a total of 5 of these for myself and gifts. If I had one thing that would make it better it would be to have it available in NASB. I have many different versions of Scripture to study with and this is one of my favorites.

I will leave to others to comment on the merits of the notes even though they were my principal reason for getting this version. Having used many Bible apps on several devices this is my first purchase of a Kindle version. I first downloaded to a Fire HAD due to there being some color content. Navigating the footnotes means following a link to the note. The note I'd is then a link back with the minor difference that the verse you started from is now at the top of the page. My preferred ereader is the Kindle Paperwhite. On it the footnote is a pop-up at the bottom of the screen and closing it leaves you where you were. The Kindle version is great if you are planning to read a book at a time as going to any book is easy, but going to a particular chapter and verse is inconvenient unless you are following a reference in a note. The publisher could reduce the inconvenience by providing a table of links to chapters at the beginning of each book. Until then, use the ebook version if you like reading a book at a time and use a Bible app if you need to quickly navigate to a given chapter and verse. For serious study the Kindle ebook provides the added advantage of syncing your reading position across multiple devices. Hope this helps, and Happy studying. Note: I have since learned that there is a link to Bible chapters.

In histories of Hollywood, most authors have forgotten or misplaced William Selig, the man who built the first movie studio in the Hollywood area, and who is more responsible than any other single person for bringing the motion picture industry to Southern California. With complete access to Selig's extensive correspondence and personal papers, Andrew A. Erish has been able to tell this story for the first time in detail. It's a remarkable and fascinating story for anyone interested in Southern California history or movie history. Selig started in Chicago, expanding his operations to Colorado and California and other areas during the earliest days of movie production. Erish makes a strong argument that many "film firsts" previously ascribed to others should actually be credited to Selig and his collaborators, including Francis Boggs, Colin Campbell, Francis Grandon and others. Selig's actors inculded Hobart Bosworth, Kathlyn Williams, William Farnum, Thomas Santschi, and many others who faces appeared on screens during the silent era. Erish's scholarship is impressive and the book is well-written. A very enjoyable read!

Finally, a rewriting of history that refreshingly replaces fiction with fact. This, instead of the oh-so-familiar-tripe trotted out as history. We live in an age where your version of the truth can easily find a following with a sympathetic story, fine sounding fable or just a keyword. In our youth we are at the whim of our parents, elders, teachers, caretakers, or others to give us the straight story ...then we're on our own. At this point we can scratch the proverbial surface for a better view or, as many do, give it a spit-shine and call it "my truth" ...regardless of it being so. Andrew Erish has deeply etched the high polish of prevailing Hollywood "history" with rock solid truth. Exposed are the petty, self-serving individuals who conveniently removed William N. Selig's name from the historical marquee and shamelessly replaced it with their own. This journey through the Colonels life leaves no doubt that the glitter of Hollywood lore has been hiding the man responsible for it's beginning. The inventor of Hollywood, Col. William N. Selig. On behalf of my family and many others, our deepest gratitude to Professor Erish.Sincerely,John William Selig

Finally-a definitive and extensively researched study of this early and egregiously forgotten innovator. If you like film-buy it and read it. If you study film-you need it in your library. Simple. Now, would someone please write the essential study of Seijun Suzuki? please? In my lifetime? Mr. Erish? Anybody?

Aside from the fact that the author is my beloved nephew, this is a long-overdue book on a very important figure in the history of filmmaking. Mr. Erish's thorough research of Col. Selig is required reading for anyone studying this topic.T. Romano

One of the very best biographical books ever written on early cinema, the depth of Andrew A Erish's research is seldom surpassed. I especially liked the fact that Erish expresses his personal views on the Armenian genocide.

While this is not a bargain priced book, it is definitely a good one. The author did a very thorough job of researching the Colonel and had the advantage of having access to a large amount of materials that helped tell this story. The resulting book tells the story of Selig who was far more than a film maker; Selig was a visionary. He saw the potential in film and its unlimited vistas. Selig started out in show business while still in his teens. Eventually, he landed in Chicago where he operated a photo studio. It was there that he realized the vast potential of film as an entertainment media. Due to the way films were being produced, Selig decided he could make better and cheaper movies and was instrumental in developing certain popular themes that continue to this day. This book looks to Selig and his studio in Edendale as the real start of the movie industry in Hollywood and details Selig's involvement in the motion picture industry. What I particularly liked about this book was its lack of redundancy. Because I knew absolutely nothing about Selig all the information was new and explained quite a lot about how the film industry operated in its infancy. As for Selig, he was a huge presence that was responsible for a lot of film firsts and innovations. There was a huge amount of material covered and I learned a lot and gained an appreciation for all this man was responsible for.The material covered could have been dry, but it wasn't. There was something exciting and fresh about how pictures were made in the early days. This is a lively book that tells an interesting story. I think this book would be a hit with anyone who is interested in films studies, though its subject is interesting in his own right.

Such a Good Girl ONE Perfect “What was it like being the homecoming queen as a freshman?” Sydnee Grace Hill, a first-semester reporter for the high school newspaper, smiles across from me at a cramped table at Hartsville High’s answer for a school café. She’s writing a student profile on me for the next issue. Each month, a senior is chosen. They asked me back in August, but I was really busy with a fund-raiser for a local no-kill animal shelter, so they scooted me back a few issues. “Oh.” I smile at the reporter, a little impressed. She’s done her homework. Well, she’s tried, at least. “I wasn’t exactly the homecoming queen, Syd.” Sydnee, a freshman herself, blushes at the nickname. “Yeah, but you got the most votes, didn’t you?” “Sure, but votes didn’t matter. Freshmen didn’t qualify. I think Madison Corrigan ended up getting it that year,” I say, like I don’t remember the exact moment they told me that I wouldn’t be crowned homecoming queen and announced Maddie instead, a cold-hearted senior with white-blond hair who was known for publicly embarrassing freshmen in front of her senior posse. She made them hold her books outside the restroom and do her laundry (including panties and sweaty gym clothes) and even forced them to do her homework, like that was supposed to somehow increase their social standing. It was definitely a travesty. “You won this year, though,” Sydnee points out. “And you’ve made homecoming court every single year.” I nod, smiling a little. It’s humbling, knowing everyone likes you that much, and that you haven’t intimidated your way into it. And scary. “It’s an honor,” I tell her, and I mean it. I really do. She writes down my words verbatim. Her big red curls fall in her face and a couple of strands stick to her bubblegum-pink lip gloss. “Can I fact-check a couple of things for the profile?” she asks. “Just to make sure I get everything right? I mean, if you have time?” Her voice wobbles. I nod. “Sure.” “You’ve been accepted to Yale, Stanford, and Harvard, correct?” “Almost. Not Harvard. Brown, actually.” I watch as she ticks off the names of the correct colleges and scratches out Harvard. She clears her throat. “Right. And you’ve been captain of the cheerleading squad for . . . ?” “Two years now. Ever since Ilana Giavanni tore her ACL.” Sydnee nods and scribbles another note. I want to ask her to use her phone to record so the interview will move more quickly, but she seems so nervous I don’t want to make it worse. This is probably her first ever interview for the Harts High Beat (and yes, that is the worst name for a newspaper ever) and I don’t want her to think she’s doing a bad job. She’s actually doing pretty well. I once was interviewed by this boy who couldn’t even write because his hands were shaking so hard. Poor thing. “And you’ve had a 4.0—since forever?” I laugh. “I think I got a lackluster grade in handwriting once. But yeah, my grades have been pretty good since—just say high school, okay?” Sydnee’s brow furrows. “Okay. Now, the fun stuff. Eye color, blue . . . height . . . five seven . . . hair color . . . blond?” I fluff my hair. “Um, my hairstylist makes it look natural, doesn’t he?” I laugh. “I’m kind of a dirty blond. Or a lackluster brunette.” She covers her mouth, like I told her some kind of dirty secret. “Am I allowed to publish that? That you’re not a real blonde?” “You can publish where I get it done, for all I care. Maybe he’ll give me a discount for the free ad space.” I laugh again, and Sydnee giggles, high-pitched and eager. “Is Hartsville your hometown?” she asks. “Born and raised.” “Okay. Now I need an embarrassing story.” “Hmm.” I tap my lips. “I once got trapped in an elevator.” Sydnee’s eyes widen. “What? How is that embarrassing? That sounds horrifying!” “Well, it was. Except that I had just downed, like, an entire grande caramel brulée latte before getting on the elevator, and I was in there, alone, for almost four hours.” Syndee’s eyes go super wide and round. “So what happened? Did you pee your pants?” “Um, remember the empty Starbucks cup?” “You didn’t.” I nod, and Sydnee covers her mouth. “By the time I got rescued, I had a full coffee cup with me. I just pretended it was, like, leftover latte, but you could totally smell it. It was pretty gross. The guy who rescued me actually made a face.” Sydnee chokes and then clears her throat. “Are you—are you sure you actually want this to be published in the paper, Riley?” I laugh. “I don’t care. It’s funny, right?” She nods. “Um, yeah. It’s just crazy.” “You can’t take everything so seriously, Sydnee.” Sydnee lifts a shoulder to her ear. I stand up from the table. “I have to meet my family for dinner, but if you have any more questions, you can text me, okay?” She blinks at me. “On your phone? I mean—you—are you sure?” I smile. “Yeah, sure. Just let me know, okay?” Sydnee unlocks her phone and hands it to me, and I enter my number as RILEY STONE !! . I try to hand it back to her, but she’s just staring at me, all trembly and owl-eyed, like I’m sort of celebrity, so I swoop in and give her a hug and a pat on the shoulder and then I just leave her phone on her notepad. “Don’t hesitate to text or whatever, okay, Syd?” I put my sunglasses on, sweep my (dyed) blond hair over my shoulder, and leave the freshman alone at the school café. “I can’t wait to see it in the paper. You’ll let me know when it runs, won’t you?” “Next . . . next week. See you later, okay, Riley Stone?” “See you, Sydnee.” I smile big at her, trying to communicate that we’re cool, and she’s cool, and maybe she doesn’t have to be so scared next time. •  •  • “This came for you,” Mom says, handing me a neat white envelope with Princeton University emblazoned on the corner. We’re all standing around in the kitchen, like we always do, but Dad’s the only one really cooking. Mom’s just getting things out of the refrigerator for him, setting them close by in case he needs them, like she’s actually part of the process or something. She’s pretty awful at it—cooking, baking, you name it. She can barely slap together a peanut butter sandwich without causing some serious damage. Dad has the talent, and right now he’s stirring his signature red sauce while it simmers on the stove top, filling the kitchen with a warm, rich, garlicky scent that would put most Italian restaurants to shame. “Do you want to try it?” my dad asks absently, not really expecting anyone to take him up on it. He knows it’s good already. It’s always good. “Um, Mom, did you see what’s on this envelope?” I wave it at her. Princeton. I didn’t get accepted early decision there, but I don’t really see any reason why I wouldn’t have been. I know what’s inside but I want her to just look at me, just for a second. “Mom.” I ease my finger under the envelope. “Just a minute, honey.” She’s turned away and already talking to Ethan, my brother, and smiling down on him with her hands on her svelte hips. He’s gotten into the garlic bread and has crumbs in the scraggly beard he’s trying to grow. He brushes at them with the back of his hand, and they fall into his lap. “How is she?” my mom is asking in a low voice, like the whole family doesn’t already know that his girlfriend is six months knocked up. With another man’s child. So scandalous. I tear off a piece of the garlic bread for myself. “Yeah, how is she?” I ask, not because I’m being nasty or anything . . . but because I really want to know. His girlfriend’s name is Esther and she’s Mother Teresa, except six months pregnant, because she fell in love with the wrong guy, which was Not Ethan, before she fell in love with the right guy, which is Hopefully Ethan. “She’s good,” Ethan says. “I’m going with her to her next doctor’s appointment.” Mom glows at him. “That’s sweet of you, honey.” I feel a little twinge beneath my breastbone. Here I am, getting greasy garlic-bread hands all over my letter from Princeton, and Mom doesn’t really care. But get my brother to go to his pregnant girlfriend’s doctor’s appointment, and she’s practically a living, breathing parental seal of approval. I bite back my disappointment. Maybe all I need for some attention is something growing in utero. I sit down at the kitchen table across from my brother while Dad takes the sauce off the stove and pours it into a white serving bowl. I stuff the garlic bread in my mouth all at once—Sydnee and everyone at school would so disapprove—and open my Princeton letter. “Dear Riley E. Stone,” I say through the mouthful of bread. I take a big drink of water and swallow it down. “We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted into Princeton University’s 2022 freshman class.” Dad turns toward me and favors me with a smile. “That’s great, sweetie.” He turns back to his spaghetti, takes it off the burner, and begins to drain the noodles. The hot water hisses as it hits the stainless steel of the sink. Mom pats me on the shoulder sort of halfheartedly and Ethan fist-bumps me. “Is Esther coming over for dinner, Ethan darling?” Mom asks my brother. “She can invite her family,” Dad says from the stove. “I’ve made plenty. Can you ask them to pick up wine, though, if her parents do come? I think a nice red could go well with this, but I haven’t bought any in ages.” “Probably not. Her dad’s on a business trip,” Ethan says. “Dunno about her mom and sisters.” He gives me a little smile. I think he feels bad. He’s always stealing my thunder a little bit, without even meaning to. He’s just that sort of person. Magnetic. Even when he’s doing something utterly without merit. He’s the type of man who could lead an entire army into a meaningless battle and they’d fight with fervor. In fact, in high school, he got suspended for two weeks when his Spanish teacher realized he was cutting class to host a twenty-man Call of Duty tournament (pay to play with a cash prize) in the school auditorium, and even after ten of the twenty players joined him (in less-serious punishments, obviously, as Ethan was found to be the ringleader) he still made out with, like, a thousand dollars. And then he just moved the tournaments to our basement when our parents weren’t home. My father sets the noodles in the middle of the table and follows it with the bowl of rich sauce, steaming from the stove. “I hear Purdue is really great,” he tells me. “You’re very lucky to be accepted.” I look down at the Princeton letter. I’ve left buttery yellow smudges all over it. “Purdue is really great,” I repeat. No one bothers to correct my father, but I’m not entirely sure they know he was wrong to start with. They start passing around the noodles. Mom wants Parmesan cheese, so I run to the refrigerator and grate a little into a tiny red bowl. “Food’s perfect, Dad,” I tell him.

Thank you to the author, Amanda K. Morgan, and Olivia (who manages the review chain) for providing me with a copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.Where do I even begin with this book? I have very mixed feelings about it. Let me explain:1.       The theme. When you start out, there isn’t too much of a theme happening. The story follows Riley, a perfect, high school senior, as she navigates the last year of high school and the pressures of romance. That’s when things start to take an unpleasant turn. I found Riley’s love interest to be rather creepy to be honest. If I were her, I would have run in the other direction as soon as possible. But in any case, it seems like there’s the whole ‘love will prevail’ theme happening which was fine and dandy. And then the author brings in the whole ‘why do women even need to be dating someone to warrant attentions?’ debate which was slightly unexpected but not at all unwelcome. But the ending! The ending just threw everything through a loop. It usurps the themes and changes everything you thought you knew which was completely wonderful! I just wish the author had done it in a slightly more obvious way. I read this book through twice and I only got the subtle references to the change in message and ending the second time around. It was completely worth the reread, though.2.      The characters. Like I said previously, I found Riley’s love interest to be creepy and I didn’t really enjoy Riley’s scenes with him. Perhaps that was the point, however, which I’m willing to concede to. Riley herself is wonderfully portrayed and painted. I honestly connected with her quite a bit (especially with the bookstore scene!) and I loved being in her head. Riley’s friends, Kolbie and Neta, however, are a different story. While they are nice characters, I didn’t feel as though they were completely fleshed out and felt. They were there and they were fine but they weren’t spectacularly built. I felt much more from Riley’s parents, surprisingly enough.3.      The plot. Like I mentioned in the theme portion, the ending takes a wonderful twist but until then, the plot is simply standard. While I was completely sucked in (I finished it in one sitting both times through), it wasn’t anything remarkable. After the second read I have come to admire the ending the author crafted, though, and the last chapter is truly stunning. Think Agatha Christie type breadcrumbs left for you after you realize what has been happening all along. It’s quite lovely and an honestly beautiful construction.4.      The romance. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I found Riley’s love interest very strange and off-putting. You could practically spot the red flags from a mile away. Sadly, Riley doesn’t seem to recognize that until it’s too late and she’s turned down a path she didn’t want. I did enjoy the dynamic the author created by introducing other love interests into the mix. Not as a love triangle (or square) formation but as a comparison of what a relationship should be like and what Riley perceives it to be.The Final Verdict:Once I delved deeper with a second reading, the true merits of this book shone beautifully. However, some might find the subtle twist in the ending too slight and could find the book lackluster (like I did the first time around).3.5 starsQuotes:“For about two seconds, I play with the normal teenage girl hope that rises up in my chest. Maybe dating someone wouldn’t be so bad. Then I pinch it out like a candle. I am more than all of that.”“Of course, I also heard she ahs an insane temper and almost got fired five years ago when she threw a hammer against the wall when someone questioned her knowledge of table saws, but maybe you get that way from years of systemic sexism.” “So of course my mom came downstairs to see what the hell her daughter was doing vacuuming so late at night (or at all), and saw Rob, who of course ma’am-ed his way into my mom’s heart immediately, and I’m relatively certain she had him mapped out as my prom date and possibly as my husband before he’d left.”“The space heater starts to make an odd metallic noise. I hope it’s not going to explode. My mom is always going on about space heaters exploding and starting stuff on fire and everyone dying.”“Weird that it took a guy for them to notice that their daughter was here, around, a sentient being instead of a picture to straighten on a wall. Weird that I wasn’t enough on my own when I was being the perfect child and pinning awards and ribbons to my dream board and filling my bank account I can’t touch with grants and my future with scholarships. It took a boy and bad grades to even get them to look at me.”

GRADE: A-4.5 STARSRiley Stone is perfect. Just ask her. Shoo-in for valedictorian, cheerleader captain, volunteer. She's even kind to her classmates. Not wanting to lose focus, she's never been on a date, by choice, although she has a crush on her Alex Belrose, her French teacher. When her older brother suggests Riley let loose, she embarks on a dangerous game of cat and mouse. Riley plays to win. And when she doesn't win, bad things happen.Riley is SUCH A GOOD GIRL. Or is she? My opinion about her shifted throughout the book. As narrator, she initially seemed like the annoying perfect girl in high school bordering between confident and cocky. She had a sense she of entitlement or maybe she just worked hard and wanted what she earned. My thoughts changed.Amanda K Morgan built the character and plot with expert precision. Every few chapters was a page Facts on Riley Stone, interesting omniscient tidbits about Riley she hadn't mentioned and subtle clues. Saying anything more would be spoilerish.I had an inkling of the twist and enjoyed the execution. I will have to reread to see all the clues I missed!

Riley is perfect – awesome grades, stellar resume, great friends. She’s one of the It Girls at school and could have any boy she wants. But she likes the attractive French teacher, not one of the silly teens at her high school. Too bad he’s off limits. She is, after all, a good girl.Wow. There’s not much I can say about this book without giving everything away. I’m still blown away by the ending. It throws everything off to where I’m wondering what actually happened. Riley is one seriously unreliable narrator. And here I thought she was just seriously uppity and proud. Should have seen that coming. Then again, some of the foreshadowing that would make the ending make more sense was … missing. I put the story together with clues that were never fully fleshed out. The how’s and when’s don’t completely add up. But then, the narrator is unreliable. The whole book was told from her perspective, which means what we read is diluted by her perception of how things occurred. Is this her explanation of events? Or what she really believes happened? Or … ?On the one hand, Such a Good Girl is beautifully crafted to keep readers intrigued and guessing. It reminds me of Edgar Allen Poe’s works and left me seriously creeped out. So many unanswered questions that lead me to create conjectures, like a great piece of literature should. On the other hand, there are way too many holes. I still don’t know what actually happened. The book has potential, but there needs to be a little something more in order to make me satisfied with it.On a completely different note, I was a bit uncomfortable with the romantic relationship between the married teacher and the underage student. I don’t like reading books in which the characters go against the regular ethical codes. I couldn’t cheer on the romance at the beginning, and certainly not at the end. The intrigue and mystery made up for it, but it still isn’t going to make it to my favorites list.I did enjoy Such a Good Girl. It kept me reading to the end and surprised me. I recommend it to fans of Pretty Little Liars.I received a complimentary copy of this book from Net Galley. I received no compensation. And all my thoughts are entirely my own.

I researched so many books before settling on this one. I wanted the dialogue to be open between my daughter and me and this book has helped greatly. The script format is so helpful and the questions are also great for cementing the truth in and clarifying. Gilkerson uses Scripture well, which I always have my daughter read aloud beforehand. This is the second book I have received in this series and I am just as pleased with this as with the first.

I bought this book and the other two - They are fantastic and amazingly opened up great communication about sex, puberty and relationships between my children and myself. I love the factual representation of a God given gift of sex. Made it easy to talk about.

Love all of these books in these series. I'm a therapist and these books are recommended to my clients parents!!

Love these books bought all three. Best set for teaching our young ones going into there maturing years.

fantastic read aloud with my young teens

A great Christian explanation of God's plan for relationships.

Easy to explain and easy for my kids to understand. We had great discussions and took most of the uncomfortableness away.

Good information!! Well wirth the buy
