This great collection of one act plays from some of last century's great Playwrights was just what I needed for my Stage Design class. It gave them much needed access to quality plays and a chance to see what collaborative work really means. Tho' most the plays were dated in some aspect, surroundings, idioms, cultural contexts, they touch on what all good plays and writing need, real human feelings and relationships.

My literature club keeps returning to this book because we like reading them in the group. We’ve relied on it repeatedly for almost 20 years. Timeless!

Used the book once and the backing split. Now, I have two parts, first half and second half of book. I think it was just kind of old and broke apart. I didn't do much to it, just opened it to read a page. Still, I needed this book, so I will live with it and a rubber band to hold it together.

Excellent choice of one-act plays.

We've enjoyed these selections as a part of a play-reading group.

Very helpful

great!

Known classics and modern plays in one compilation... most people would have come across at least half of the contents from other books and resources.

Incrdible. This book is amazing. The writers are true to the spirit, and the lines of the sprits'l. I am a proud sprits'l owner, and I know what the fair ones look like. The boat they model in this book has all the right curves in the right places to put a pin up model to shame. They lay out in simple terms and with precise measurements the entire process of the build. Step by step, and peice by peice they make a tiny perfect duplicate of a real working sprits'l. I couldn't imagine a concisely written, yet plenty explanatory, and well illustrated way to have written this book. It covers all the bases, and hits a home run. I believe it would be totally possible to loft the dimensions up, and build a fine full sized sprits'l from the lines and dimensions in this book. There's no higher compliment.

The well-written instructions and excellent photographs in this book made construction of the Spritsail Skiff model simple and enjoyable. After making several false starts in scale model building, this book helped me to create a finished product that has received very positive reviews. This is an excellent book for anyone with basic modeling skills to get started in wooden model boat building. I enjoyed the presentation so much, I bought the companion book on building the Skipjack and I am now half finished with that model. Let's hope that Steve Rogers and Patricia Staby-Rogers continue to publish more of these excellent books for hobbyists.

I now have all of Steve & Patricia's books. Well written and well illustrated. Complete, detailed instructions for building this North Carolina work boat. Due to health issues, I had to "downsize" my life, including my full-size furniture building hobby. The Roger's model building process was a natural transition for my skills set. I'm indebted to them for showing me how to still be creative!

I like the way he writes his books.

Love it! I learned so much by following his example. Nice illustrations and directions. Details exactly what supplies are needed, which nails/pins to use during construction. His experience shows thru. Ended up with a beautiful boat model.

very interesting

Very comprehensive and well thought out. This book also covered more than I expected. How to make the sails and rigging. Also the process of painting was explained.

Timley dilivery. Packaged well. Great price. No problems.

Starmaker Life As a Publicist with Farrah, The Rat Pack, and 600 More Stars Who Fired Me by Jay Bernstein (Author), Larry Cortez Hamm (Author),David Rubini (Contributor) opens with Bernstein speaking to a mother and her daughter connected to a wealthy and influential family in the United States and his confession that he compared her to one of his favorite clients Farrah Fawcett and he also writes positively of Suzanne Somers (pages 2-3), and how he bounced back early in his career after he endured one of his first experiences with getting fired in Hollywood. Bernstein additionally covers multiple points in his career such as as his work with celebrities such as Sammy Davis Jr. and Frank Sinatra (pages 90-91). On page 189 Bernstein recalls meeting up with the late financier and producer Dino De Laurentis (one of his granddaughters is Giada De Laurentis, a famous chef) and on page 247 he admits to the heartbreaking moment that he was fired by Farrah Fawcett (even despite their mutual respect for each other). Fawcett and Bernstein were dining at the Bagel Nosh, a Beverly Hills restaurant and Fawcett did at least admit that she could no longer keep Bernstein as her publicist as a condition for her new Faberge contract (this was eye-opening to me because it proved to me that sometimes people are not necessarily fired due to bosses and/or management that hate them but other circumstances that a person can’t always prepare for ahead of time). In Chapter 22 (starts on page 249),Jay Bernstein discusses his employment with Suzanne Somers. I’m also glad to have come across this book because the author indirectly shows how people can put in a word and/or favor for someone, which can garner them unexpected help in the career/professional arena. I’m lucky to have seen this firsthand in my own life because I received an unexpected but positive-oriented letter in the mail letting me know that my name was among the list of people selected for free assistance with my employment endeavors (this unexpectedly occurred less than three to four days ago after I was praying for any forms of help with my career endeavors/pursuits).

Everything I would like to say about this book Jay Bernstein said so much better. He literally followed his dream to Hollywood and kept going. So many other television, movie and music dreams would have never come true without Jay Bernstein guiding, pushing and sometimes dragging his clients to their places in the spotlight and I laughed at how often his maneuvers took them to stardom and either became or propped up the foundations of their legends. He loved Hollywood and I came away from this book feeling that when he left he took an essential part of it with him. His clients so often became his friends and the stories he tells about them at the times he influenced their careers are sometimes shocking and frequently surprising. I believe he was determined they too would realize their Hollywood dreams because in attaching to him they became part of his own.Jay Bernstein's finest time in the entertainment industry was when someone with his extraordinary talent, audacity and balls could manufacture a clear path to stardom for someone lucky enough to be his client and he revels in telling those stories here and yes, he does name names, lots and lots of names. If you are wondering about the title of my review, read the book.

An insightful journey into the life of Jay Bernstein, the publicist who knew and worked for so many stars, it's hard to believe. And yet, it all rings true.

I enjoyed this book very much. Was very young when most of his clients were at the height of their fame. Interesting how you think fame just happens by itself, but apparently, there is always someone behind the curtain pulling the strings. He had a great life!

...and it's writer, but then I got to the part where he purposely payed off a stuntman to punch Sammy Davis Jr. in his bad eye (no less) for the publicity, unbeknownst to Mr. Davis. He never did admit to it either. What an Ass!

The book was interesting, but I got the impression that the author wanted to impress the reader with his prowess as a mover and shaker in Hollywood, rather than telling the inside story of what happened.

What a book. Unbelievable stories that somehow ring true. Guess that's the essence of a life well lived in Hollywood.

Duhs. There's so much Farrah in here that I simply couldn't put this down on my flight to Hawaii. Fun and fabulous. He was CRAZy.

This really is different than the other "voyeur-into-Hollywood" books out there. I know it appears to be one of those, but it really is a true account (from Jay's perspective) of life as a Hollywood publicist. It is FASCINATING. And he is not afraid to name names. I really enjoyed this.

This is a nice reference book on C++.If I were new to C++, I would not start learning C++ with this book. Rather, I would use these below three steps and the relevant books in this order:1. Accelerated C++ by Andrew Koenig & Barbara Moo -- Read and practice example code and exercises from this book first.2. Programming: Principles and Practice Using C++ (2nd Edition) by Bjarne Stroustrup -- Chapters 5,6, and 7 are gems in this book. You can in fact use this book in parallel with the Accelerated C++ book and3. (a) The C++ Programming Language (4th Edition) by Bjarne Stroustrup, -- Definite reference book to have.3. (b) The C++ Standard Library: A Tutorial and Reference (2nd Edition) by Nicolai M. Josuttis, -- Clear examples and very methodical3. (c) C++ Templates: The Complete Guide by David Vandevoorde -- What can I say! This is simply a classic.C++ is not a race. It is a marathon. So, enjoy learning and also make use of many many C++ resources online.

Once you get past the obligatory introduction, this book is pretty much broken down into three sections (there are actually four in the book, but two of them are related, IMO). The first section (Chapters 2-5) is a crash course on C++... what Mr. Stroustrup calls "a tour of C++." *IF* you are already a seasoned programmer--and I'm talking about years of structured development in a professional environment--then this first section will bring you up-to-speed with C++ in minimal time. Knowing C at the start helps, as the basic syntax, operators, statements, etc are common to both languages, but it is not a necessity. The language with which you're familiar isn't as important as having a sufficient background and experience. I personally found this first section invaluable, as it allowed me to "learn" C++ in one weekend... at least to a point where I could pass two separate C++ assessments the following week and land job interviews because of it. [I have 24 years of C experience under my belt but am brand new to C++.] However, if you don't have the necessary background before beginning, this section will get you lost real fast, and will end up discouraging you more than helping you! You have been duly warned. The next section (Chapters 6-29) is SUPPOSED to be a structured tutorial section, starting at square one; however, it is anything but! This section assumes you have read--and more importantly, thoroughly understand--the "tour" provided in the first section. This second section, unfortunately, ends up being more "lawyer speak" on C++ than an actual tutorial (IMHO). Now granted, you need to know the rules in order to create valid C++ programs; but come on! There's got to be a better way to present the subject matter than simply throwing a bunch of obscure rules at the reader. In addition to the "lawyer speak", I also found this section a little too "preachy" for my taste at times. However, in spite of my criticisms, I found this section to be the ultimate supplement to Lippman's "C++ Primer (5th ed)"; i.e. after reading Chapters 2-5, I used Lippman's book as a formal tutorial then came back to this section to take my skills and knowledge to the next level. Mr. Stroustrap divides this 2nd section into two parts, The Basics (types, pointers, functions, etc) and Abstraction Mechanisms (classes, constructors, hierarchies, templates, etc). The final section (Chapters 30-44) examines the Standard Library. The Standard Library is just as important and integral a part of the C++ language as the language itself, akin to the C Standard Library but much more far-reaching. I remember reading somewhere (perhaps it was even this book) that the library description takes up 2/3 of the official C++ specification! The fact that the library is part of the C++ specification implies that its contents are fully supported, and hence presumably the most efficient implementations available... to a degree. [Meaning that the most efficient "general" solution is not necessarily the best solution for one's particular application.] Understanding what's available in the Standard Library and how to utilize it is obviously an important aspect of the language, and this last section is a valuable reference; but that's all it is (i.e. a reference vs a tutorial). Fortunately, several hard examples of the Standard Library are used throughout the earlier portions of the text, but it only scratches the surface.Mr. Stroustrap created C++, so it shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone when I say that this is the definitive book on the subject. However, it is not necessarily the best book from which to learn C++. That said, I found the "crash course" in Chapters 2-5 invaluable, and I am grateful that he included it.So, in summary, if you want to start from scratch and take a traditional structured approach to learning C++, I would suggest you seek an alternative book. The Lippman book I mentioned earlier is great, and I've seen lots of rave reviews about another of Mr. Stroustrup's books, "Programming: Principles and Practice Using C++ (2nd ed)"If you're an experienced professional who needs to come up to speed with C++ in minimal time, then Chapters 2-5 are a good way to do it; but you might want to investigate Mr. Stroustrup's other book instead, "A Tour of C++". [Note, I have not read that book and cannot comment on its contents, but I assume it's a more detailed & structured version of Chapters 2-5 in this book.]In both cases, beginner or professional, this book is THE ultimate reference source for all things C++.Good luck in your C++ journey!

Stroupstrup is a master educator. This book communicates a lot of complex details clearly and memorably. I can only find fault with the size of the book -- the first C++ Programming Language book was, if memory serves, a much slimmer volume. That smaller book was my go-to reference back in the early 90s. C++ has grown a lot since then, but this latest version of the book is logically and seamlessly organized, mixing the old C/C++ world with the much-improved C++11 language. For those who don't have this kind of historical context to help, Stroustrup mixes in some advice on use of older language features that have been improved upon (such as raw pointers versus standard smart pointer wrappers). If you are doing modern C++ development, you need this book. The clarity of the descriptions and the completeness of coverage of what has become a vast language (when you include all the standard library features) will save you time, and inspire you to write clear, concise, elegant code.

The only C++ reference that is worth considering. If you are a C++ programmer, you need this book as a reference in order to understand the language and the intent behind some of the features (especially the new C++11).I don't think this book is a starting point for beginners that want to learn the language. Who want to read 1000+ book when they just want to get started. I got put off by the 3rd edition when I started programming C++ and came back to it later. Use "A Tour of C++" from the same author to get the gist of the language and come back to this book once you are more experienced with the language. I also found the 4th edition to be clearer and better presented than the previous edition. Finally, I will restate an advice I found useful from the C++ isofaq, whatever language you want to learn, there is 3 types of books you must have:- 1 reference book to present you what is legal in the language- 1 advice/rule book to present you what is moral in the language- 1 example bookIn my opinion the definitive C++ reference book is Bjarne book. You may not need it now but you will come back to it once you matured in the language, and when you really want to understand the feature you are using.

If you want to learn C++ quickly, or just want to cover the main language functions, this isn't the book for you. On the other hand, if your goal is to become a C++ master - and take the time involved getting there - this is the book for you. It's a long read and a very technical read, and covers every language facet from the basic to the esoteric in great detail. Of course, written by the father of C++ himself.
