In Collins' new book he relies on the method you've seen in previous books like Built to Last and Good to Great. What's different in this one is he selected companies not just on their status or explosive growth, but because they succeeded in an extreme and uncertain environment. However, there's a caveat here: his research stopped in 2002, meaning there's no thorough analysis of how companies performed in the last 10 years (aka one of the most uncertain and chaotic business climates in decades). Collins and Hansen believe the future will be unstable and environments will be extreme for the rest of "our lives" (remember, these guys aren't Spring Chickens). So, they try to analyze company performance/greatness within the context of difficulty.I always wish Amazon would show an easy-to-find Table of Contents for books, so I've created one for you here, complete with a summary of each chapter/section.1 - THRIVING IN UNCERTAINTYCollins and Hansen explain what the method for their book (what I described above), including the definition of a 10Xer, which is a company that beat their industry by 10 fold. Just 7 companies were selected as a 10X case out of 20,400 companies. The seven are Amgen, Biomet, Intel, Microsoft, Progressive Insurance, Southwest Airlines, and Stryker. They don't include Apple because their research lens of Apple vs. Microsoft focused primarily on the 1980s and 1990s (remember they stopped collecting data in 2002), which makes no sense to me. The present environment (the one in which Apple has exploded) is a far more difficult climate than the 80s-90s.2 - 10XersExample of a 10xer is Southwest airlines, whose growth since 1972 is greater than that of Walmart, despite this period being a particularly harsh one for the airline industry. Anecdotes describe historic examples of 10xers and explains they aren't more creative, more visionary, more charismatic, or more ambitious, more blessed by luck, more risk seeking, more heroic, or more bold. The glaring fact that Apple is missing goes against this model, as Jobs and company were many of these things.3 - 20 MILE MARCHHere they introduce discipline as the key that sets 10Xers apart (hence the 20 mile march). 10Xers are focused on data with GREAT discipline and stick to their plan, like a 20 Mile March.4 - FIRE BULLETS, THEN CANNONBALLS10Xers were not more innovative than the control companies; indeed, they were considered less innovative in some comparisons. 10Xers scale innovation (firing bullets) and then the fire cannonballs once they know what's on target.5 - LEADING ABOVE THE DEATH LINEExplains "productive paranoia," the idea that you need to build cash reserves and buffers, bound your risk, and show flexibility in looking at macro and micro factors at play in your business and industry.6 - SMaCSMaC stands for Specific, Methodological, and Consistent. The more uncertain your environment, the more SMaC you need to be. A SMaC recipe is a set of durable operating principles and practices that create a replicable and consistent success formula.7 - ROL (RETURN ON LUCK)10Xers weren't more lucky or unlucky than comparisons. They had better ROL because they took full advantage of good luck and minimized the effects of bad luck. If you think about it, that's the real key to luck. Knowing when you got lucky and how to take advantage of it, rather than blindly thinking you walk on water (like so many businesses do).Like Jim's other books, the how to is what's missing. An outstanding book for that (increasing your leadership skill set) is Leadership 2.0

A couple of years ago, I picked up Jim Collins and Morten Hansen’s book Great by Choice: Uncertainty, Chaos, And Luck – Why Some Thrive Despite Them All to check a few facts. Two hours later, I was still reading. Recently, that happened again.I realized that I never reviewed Great by Choice for my website, so I picked it up and, just like the last time, found myself still reading a couple of hours later. I think Great by Choice is, Jim Collins’ best book. The partnership with Morten Hansen makes the reasoning tighter and the research a bit broader than in Collins’ other books. Here’s the authors’ statement of what they want the book to achieve.“First, we believe the future will remain unpredictable and the world unstable for the rest of our lives, and we wanted to understand the factors that distinguish great organizations, those that prevail against extreme odds, in such environments. Second, by looking at the best companies and their leaders in extreme environments, we gain insights that might otherwise remain hidden when studying leaders in more tranquil settings.”The opening chapter, Thriving in Uncertainty, is an introduction to the book. The research is typical Jim Collins. He went looking for enterprises that had great performance over many years in a particularly turbulent environment and that started from a position of vulnerability. In this chapter, the authors share their findings about five what they call “entrenched myths” that were disproved by their research. Here are the myths.1. Successful leaders in a turbulent world are bold, risk-seeking visionaries.2. Innovation distinguishes those companies that succeed in a fast-moving, uncertain and chaotic world.3. A threat-filled world favors the speedy.4. Radical change on the outside requires radical change on the inside.5. Great enterprises have a lot better luck than other enterprises. All of those, are false. So, what is this book about? It’s simple, Great by Choice will prepare you to succeed in a world that you cannot predict.Chapter two is “10Xers.” That’s what the authors call the super successful and adaptable companies that they studied. The core of the chapter is the story of Roald Amundsen and his race to the South Pole. Next, they define 10X leadership as three important things: fanatic discipline; productive paranoia; empirical creativity.Every chapter ends the same way. There’s a summary of key findings, of course, but also unexpected findings and another part called “One Key Question,” which they suggest you answer. The authors call chapter three “The 20-Mile March” and it’s about having concrete, clear, and rigorous performance mechanisms that keep you on track. They phrase this philosophy as a commitment to high performance in difficult conditions and (this is important) “the discomfort of holding back in good conditions.”This all made sense to me. I’m a proponent of getting a little better, pushing forward, and making a little progress every day. The finding that I found surprising and helpful was that the idea of the 20-mile march also includes not pressing too hard ahead when conditions are good. It’s a continued steadiness. When times are good, stick to your discipline. Don’t try to go explosive.Chapter four is titled “Fire Bullets, Then Cannonballs.” For the authors, a bullet is a test that you make to determine what works. A bullet is a low-cost, low-risk, low-distraction trial. It’s what puts the “empirical” in “empirical creativity.”This is what I learned in my early direct-response career. You test things. When those things work, you expand a little bit, but you also understand that many of the things you test won’t work.Chapter five is “Leading above the Death Line.” The chapter is about risk in two areas. First, it is about the things you can do to minimize the risk of unforeseen and uncontrollable events. Then, the authors talk about three kinds of risk. Death line risk is where there’s a risk of destroying or severely damaging the enterprise. Asymmetric risk is where the downside is much larger than the upside. Uncontrollable risk is what it sounds like, something that can’t be either controlled or managed. The big takeaway for me is in the “One Key Question” that the authors suggested you ask about yourself and your enterprise: “How much time before the risk profile changes?”Chapter six is about “SMaC.” SMaC stands for Specific, Methodical, and Consistent. The lessons in this chapter were a lot like the ones in “20-Mile March” chapter. The key point is that in an uncertain, fast-changing environment, you need to be specific, methodical, and consistent. The final chapter is about “Return on Luck.” As you might expect, the basic thing to learn is you’re going to have good luck and you’re going to have bad luck, and what’s going to matter is what you do with it. That’s a lot like the message of a bevy of motivational speakers, but it’s still important. My mother had a question she asked in all kinds of situations: “What good can we make of this?” You improve your return on luck by asking questions like thatBottom LineAs with every book with Jim Collins’ name on the cover, this one is superbly written with dozens of well-told stories, liberally seasoned with facts. What makes this book special is the tightness of the reasoning and the phrasing of the research. The big plus of this book, for me, was that this is not only about organizations. You can apply the things you find here to a career or a project or just about any part of life. You’re going to have luck. It’s what you do with it that matters. To find out how to do the best possible job dealing with the luck you get, read Great by Choice.

This is an ok book with many of the same stories and themes from Jim Collins' previous books. If you've read those, I wouldn't recommend also reading this. While many of the themes are sound advice and good stories of past successes and failures, the book begins to feel repetitive and hollow about a third of the way in.

Jason spent two years in a poor rural community (location) in RSA, on the border with SW, with Peace Corps to assist with the implementation of the new curriculum in the local schools. This book describes the current constraints gripping both blacks and white South Africans, focusing on the intricacies and complexities of how race and socio/economic status defines interactions in post-Apartheid South Africa. The book highlights the cultural and economic clash between South Africa’s western, urban, rich first world and the rural deprived poor countryside. The book also provides a view of the challenges that the Country has to face in terms of bridging inequalities and creating a more just and equal society, while at the same time ensuring that the rule of law is adhered to.I believe Jason did a great work portraying a balanced view of a complicated, magnificent but troublesome Country. Of particular interest is the ominous fear of white population, which permeates every aspect of life, and the economic and cultural contraposition within black South Africans between the rural poor, the low-income township dwellers and the rich urban elite working for corporations and government. Stemming from his Peace Corps experience, the author also provides some perspectives on the States, in particular on its race-relations issues.Great book to read, worth your time, if you are interested in modern RSA. The author details the challenges that South African poor rural areas are facing in terms of crime, hazardous natural and built environment, road accidents, alcohol abuse, HIV/AIDS, tensions between races, culture contrapositions, language barriers, lack of skills, unemployment, lack of resources in the education system, corruption in the police force, prostitution, lack of moral values, and poverty in general. Interesting was the author’s experience with the administration of justice in a South African court and its inefficiency and appalling bureaucracy. However, he also brings to the fore the positive things stemming out from a ruinous past: Ubuntu, the willingness to make things work, the desire to better the life of people across the board and the willingness to bridge divisions and historical differences. In particular, one aspects, which should be underlined and which stems out of Jason’s work to kick-start successful new projects and ideas to enhance education is the endless possibilities and opportunities that exist in South Africa to make things better. The book closes on a positive note: in spite of widespread Western African pessimism, Jason provides us with encouraging and constructive perspective about a poor rural South African town, highlighting the opportunities that exist for a better future for all:“[…] The great powers of the world may have done wonders in giving the world an industrial and military look, but the great gift still has to come from Africa – giving the world a more human face […]” (S. Biko, mentioned in the book).

Really good book about Jason‘s experiences in South Africa in the Peace Corps

Great read. Both my husband and I enjoyed reading it. I have now passed it on to a family whose son has studied in South Africa.

When my local media do a "Hometown Heroes" piece or series, the heroes sometimes turn out to be firefighters or in law enforcement. Generally, however, the heroes are military personnel or officers. I've never seen somebody from the Peace Corps or AmeriCorps so designated. What does this say about our society and its values and goals? The Peace Corps Act of 1961 sets out the mission of promoting world peace and friendship. Sargent Shriver, the architect of the Peace Corps, forcefully maintained: "No matter how many bombs we drop, no matter how skillfully our soldiers fight, we are not responding to the ultimate challenge until we show the world how and why we must all learn to live in peace--until peace becomes the only permanent alternative to war."Jason Carter's patent dedication, ingenuity, and enthusiasm for his Peace Corps assignment in (barely) post-apartheid South Africa give us another definition of heroism to thoughtfully consider. The stark proximity of First World South Africa, mere minutes away, to the Third World South African village in which he was based is an appalling revelation. The amount of the Peace Corps' entire budget in its first 50 years--roughly $8.7 billion--was spent by the Department of Defense budget in just five days during the past year. Bombs and drones--or Jason Carters? Which is more likely to make us safe and secure? Read this book before you answer that question.

The story of a white, privileged peace corps volunteer in post-apartheid South Africa is certainly interesting. Carter provides enough details of his life in the village and the contrast between rural poverty and rapid urban development to keep the book moving along. however, he's simply not a great writer, and he suffers when compared to other PC memoirists. If you're looking for a book about South Africa's modern struggles, this isn't too bad. If you're expecting a deep, moving Peace Corps travel memoir, look elsewhere.

I am a writer and a poet. I have been living in the USA for over 40 years. I came to the United States in 1966 as a thirteen year old. I was recommended this book by a friend at the Sarah Lawrence Summer Writing Institute where I have been writing poetry. So much in this book resonates with me. I understand many things that Jason is describing: his culture shock, the great divide between blacks and whites that remains until this day. What I related to most of all was his having to explain himself over and over as a white person -- his daily practices. That is exactly what I encountered coming to the United States. People still ask me after forty years, why it is that I am white and Jewish, and other quite ridiculous questions that to me, should be obvious. I even had both of my daughters who are five years apart call me from school, and beg me to speak to their friends on the phone, assuring them that I am white and Jewish. So, in spite of Nelson Mandela's world fame and the dismantling of apartheid, many people in the world are still basically ignorant about South Africa and its people. And I can say the same thing for South Africans: many of them are ignorant about Americans who come to their towns, especially Peace Corps workers like Jason Carter who lived as a white amongst blacks as he worked hard to update the obsolete apartheid-based black education. Reading this book was like hearing from a long lost brother, and I recommend it to anyone who is eager to learn about South Africa's history and its struggles since the ending of Apartheid.

Purgatory: Explained by the Lives and Legends of the Saints, by Rev. Fr. F. X. Shouppe S.J.

About the Author

Father F.X. Schouppe, S.J. was an eminent theologian of the nineteenth century. He was the author of Purgatory Explained by the Lives and Legends of the Saints and The Dogma of Hell. His purpose with the latter work, though the subject itself is terrifying, was not to sensationalize or to horrify, but rather to instruct people on the reality of Hell and to excite them to a dread of losing Heaven. The Dogma of Hell was originally published in 1883 by P.V. Hickey, and Purgatory Explained was printed in the late 1800s with the Nihil Obstat and Imprimatur.

I had to put this one down a couple of times. Not because I disagreed with it but because it was so profound and I needed to fully comprehend how important the points where. Be prepared to have your spiritual life change as a result of reading this book. I can't recommend it enough.

This book is intense. If you have never read anything on Purgatory then please don't start with this book. This book is geared more for Catholics who are already praying for the poor souls in Purgatory. If you are looking for a book that deals more with how scripture supports the existence of Purgatory, I might suggest you read the "Biblical Basis for Purgatory" by John Salza. If you have never read anything about Purgatory and have lots of questions about it, I suggest reading "Get Us Out of Here" by Nicky Eltz and Maria Simma. After you have read those books or other ones then read this one. This book wakes you up about the pains of Purgatory. The author has compiled numerous I witness accounts from the lives of the holy saints and other creditable sources to show the details, the location, the amount of time one can spend there, the terrible pains, the physical evidence that poor souls have left behind, what we can do to avoid it, and how we can provide relief to the poor souls in Purgatory. These souls know they are saved and choose to be purified there rather than be blemished in the presence of God. (See Hebrews 12:1-29 and Rev 21:27)I strongly recommend reading this book as it will make your prayers and devotion to our Lord Jesus more fervent. God Bless!

Covers the teachings on Purgatory as well as how greatly we benefit from helping souls there. We have no idea how much souls suffer there, and they are often quickly forgotten at death. The book explains how to help them, with story after story on how the saints have done so. Christianity is a team sport, and we work together, we on earth praying for them and they in Purgatory praying for us. The stories are magnificent and very inspiring. Couldn’t put the book down. On my short list of spiritual reading favorites. Biblical quotes throughout.

This is a very comprehensive look at the apparitions of various Saints whose visions of Purgatory are explained, and the book also provides insights as to where Purgatory is and the various levels of Purgatory. There is also much reading about devotions on behalf of the Holy Souls. The author also details the ways we can employ to lessen our Purgatory or avoid it completely, all of which are within our reach. I would recommend this book.

This is the best book on Purgatory that I have ever read. I bought this book in the early 1970's and then passed it on to someone else because it was so good. Years later, in the early 2000's I bought another copy to read it again. Now, I have purchased an ebook copy. It is so enlightening! If I could, I would give it a 10-Star rating.

Everyone should read this. We all have the tendency to make light of the justice of God and the value of little things

Francis X. Schoupe, S.J., a renowned French Jesuit expounds eloquently on the necessity of Purgatory. Please study this book carefully because it stresses an important aspect of the afterlife that is often overlooked. This book reads wonderfully. It has helped underscore my staunch faith in the Catholic Church of which I am a proud member.
