I purchased this book because I wanted to read a book that would help me improve my implementation of independent reading with my sixth and seventh grade students. Little did I know that I was purchasing a treasure and quite possibly the most practical book out there for anyone interesting in getting students of any age to just...read and actually enjoy it! Gordon expertly anticipates the pitfalls and hiccups that occur with students in a language arts classroom and provides realistic and innovative solutions for each one. Every time I read one of the strategies she offers in the book my teacher brain would think of ways it could go wrong in the classroom; by the time I got to the next page or section, it almost felt like she read my mind because she addressed the issues I thought of each and every time. She also offers tons of resources in the appendix to help teachers implement the strategies offered in each chapter. This is the best money I have ever spent and cannot stop recommending and raving about this book. If you are a Language Arts/English teacher of any grade level looking to take your students' reading motivation to the next level and get them truly invested in reading, this is the only book you'll ever need!

This book is a great educational tool for children with food allergies, and I think the follow-up book the author wrote (the BugyBops) is a nice addition, for children who don't have food allergies, but are exposed to children who do. I don't adore the cadence when reading this aloud... there's places that it feels to me the words should (and could) rhyme... but that's a personal preference of mine. The illustrations are cute and engaging, and the information is accurate, relevant, and presented in a way that children will be engaged and will learn potentially life saving information.

Wonderful book to open the discussion on my son's food allergies. I actually find the cadence of the rhyme a little awkward, but my 3 year old loves it, which is all that matters. With school on the horizon, he'll be spending more time out of my care and it's so important that he's aware of and learns to ask about the safety of food around him. This was a wonderful, fun way to introduce the concept.

The Bugabees is a great book to teach children that they can have fun even without their problem food. It includes a bug with an allergy to each of the top 8 foods, and a bonus at the end where you can discuss allergies and safe foods with your child. I loved that they were able to tell the reader that allergies are serious and sometimes need shots etc, but without making it scary.

Our 2.5 year old with 5 food allergies LOVES this book. Some days we just read the pages that relate to her allergies, but some days she wants to read them all. The story is simple and cute, and the repetition helps her remember the basic gist "i can still have fun without X"

My child with food allergies LOVES that there is a book that tells a story about something he deals with every day.I think we will buy another copy to donate to his preschool class room. :) It's an adorable book. The illustrations are super cute and the author seems to have tried to include a mention of all of the most common food allergies, so that most kids won't feel that their allergy is left out.

I bought this purely for educational purposes, to start some conversations with my 3 yo son about his allergies and make it a "normal" thing. I really didn't think he'd like the book. To my surprise, it's his favorite! We have to read it every night! He thinks the bugs are so cute. At the end, I'm "not allowed" to skip the last pages where we go over which allergies he has and which foods he can eat from the choices. Love it!

This is so so cute and a great informational book for young children to learn about allergies. Our little girl has a peanut allergy and this has helped her understand that she isn't alone. We will be buying another copy as a Christmas gift for her teacher to read to the class :)

This is a wonderful book for teachers, or for children with food allergies! It is fun to read, and very engaging. I enjoyed it so much that I bought one for my sons teacher to keep in her classroom.

This well-written historical biography chronicles the life of Peter Siebert, growing up in a suburb of Boston, his lifelong love of skiing, his sacrifices for his country on the mountains of Italy during the war, his perseverance at overcoming his physical wounds and scars, and his determination to find his own mountain where he could develop a ski destination of his dreams. I found it to be a quick read, but full of information about thousands of soldiers who undertook a mission I had never heard about before, and an inspirational story of one man's journey to pursue his lifelong dream, no matter what obstacles he faced. Mrs. Borden's unique style of writing and voice make this an easy and interesting story for juveniles (and adults) and and leaves you with a warm feeling.

My brother and nephew are special ops, so this title topic caught my eye. I also teach writing and Children's Literature at the college level, so I'm always on the lookout for innovative ways to tell stories to young readers. Poetry may not be the first choice of most kids interested in war and/or skiing. But this true WW2 story of Pete Seibert and the 10th Mountain Division that broke through the German line in the Appenine peaks benefits from the spare music of poet Louise Brooks. As a teacher, I can discuss alliteration and consonance as well as imagery and tension in the following lines alone: As more shells shook the walls,/the medics pulled Pete under the table/and huddled beside him. The "L" sounds ring in my ears, as the artillery must have in Pete's. In addition to his heroics, Pete's recovery from his serious injuries to become one of pioneers of commercial skiing is inspiring. And I'm not even a skier! Bravo, veterans! Bravo, Brooks!

Review: This book is a memoir, written in verse form about Pete Seibert, a passionate skier who enlisted in the 10th Mountain fighting in combat on skis in the mountains of Italy in World War II. He and many of his division were injured or killed. Pete was devastatingly injured in the war and sent home, but he was determined to heal and do the work so that he could return to and return to skiing. Later he fulfilled his childhood dream and developed a famous ski resort in Vail, Colorado. This very well written book is very informative. Written in verse form makes it easy to read and it will not overwhelm or intimidate readers. It provides very good information about a division in World War II of which many are not aware. Black and white photographs are used throughout the text which enhances the biography.Recommendation: This book is recommended as a very good book of note for any middle or high school library; informs and engages readers. How much more convenient it was when Elvis started appearing in NY!This is the book for all those Elvis fans who have been collecting for 40 years, and those who are new to the world of Elvis memorabilia. Whether it's a rare promotional record or an Elvis keychain, you'll find it in this book. I don't know many people who would sell items from their Elvis horde, but it's great to know what things are worth, and what else is out their to try to pick up. This book is filled with great information about Elvis' music and other memorabilia. I bought mine at Graceland in 1999 and after seeing the current prices, I'm glad I did. It is a treasure trove of trivia and details about the great variety of music that was published when Elvis was alive and in the years following his death.
