Except for a page of notes and a glossary, there is no context or synthesis provided by the book's compilers, who have seen the show over 100 times between them. There are no direct quotations from the show's conceiver and choreographer Michael Bennett (who died in 1987), its composer (Marvin Hamlisch), or one of its lead performers (Donna McKechnie, Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical); thus the book is weak on the show's creative aspects. Nevertheless, buried inside the trivia and the petty gripes of many of the interviewees are valuable nuggets of information and an enlightening overall impression, which theater scholars may find useful. For that reason, libraries supporting advanced research in American theater, as well as public libraries with fanatic client interest, should purchase. This book is utterly useless as a study or history of A CHORUS LINE. Look in the index and you will find fewer that a dozen references to Marvin Hamlisch in the entire volume. There is absolutely NO assessment or WEST SIDE STORY with no mention of Leonard Bernstein. Clearly, whoever put this cut-and-paste hodgepodge together must have loathed Hamlisch. They certainly have the right to personally dislike the man, but they do NOT have the right (as want-to-be historians) to neglect his contribution the show. Save your money!

James G. Dwyer received his JD degree from Yale Law School and a PhD in philosophy from Stanford University. He taught at the University of Wyoming School of Law and Chicago-Kent School of Law. He has worked as an attorney in law firms in Washington, DC and as a law guardian representing children in family court in upstate New York. He has published several articles and book chapters on children's rights in law journals such as The California Law Review and the North Carolina Law Review. He has written two books - Religious Schools v. Children's Rights and Vouchers Within Reason: A Child-Centered Approach to Education Reform.

James Dwyer is perhaps the foremost scholar on children's rights in the United States. This book only adds to his accomplishments. The current legal system does more to protect parents who abuse and neglect their children than it does to protect the children. We force children to be in relationships that are to their detriment that they would never choose for themselves.Dwyer's ideas may seem radical, but his methodical arguments leave little doubt at their conclusion. To his credit he addresses counterarguments to his position that are substantive, rather than merely strawmen. In the process he gives one of the best overviews of the topic individual autonomy that I have seen.For anyone who works to protect children, this book is required reading. When it comes to doing what is best children, our society talks a good game but does little service. The system is fundamentally flawed: this book shows the flaws and how to fix them.

Serious problems with kindle edition. Wrong title, skips from table of contents to middle of book. Had to return, which is a shame because I am eager to read this book. But I'll give the content 5 stars without even reading it because I think the topic is so important!

This book is nothing short of a miracle.If I may be allowed to beat an old, worn cliche to death a little more: the one book (if I could only bring one) that I'd bring to that fabled desert island: Yes, this one.Bryant is a brilliant scholar and an amazing communicator. When it comes to relaying intricate and sometimes conflicting views about esoteric angles of abstruse subjects, care (above all else) is called for, and Bryant cares, cares very deeply to get the point across as clearly and as vividly as possible; and he succeeds in this nearly impossible task.Yoga, of course, is so much more than stretching and sitting exercises to limber us up (as we in the west normally view the subject). Posture takes up less than one percent of Patanjali's Sutras, the rest is devoted to meditation and spiritual liberation.The East Indians have been at this for a long time, and there is a lot to learn and know about this subject. Patanjali, around 400 CE, sat down to summarize what he knew at that point (recalling all teachings from the Upanishads forward) about walking this path, and he did an amazing, if concise, job of it. Following Patanjali, several commentators did their best to clarify and illustrate Patanjali's often cryptic statement.Bryant uses not only Patanjali's Sutras, but also avails himself of the major commentators' clarifications as well, and so reconciles this stream of knowledge into a coherent whole that really, yes, really makes sense and is proving very helpful to me as a meditator, even though I'm mostly of the Theravada persuasion.I urge whoever will read this book to read it slowly and carefully. It all makes perfect sense, but does take some careful digesting. I actually read my Kindle version while I used the glossary in my paper version to keep reminding me of the various Sanskrit words used. It was worth the effort.As I said, this book is a miracle, nothing short of that, and I could not recommend it more.Ulf Wolf

Totally impressive! It's not easy to bridge the gap between academics and the general public, and this is a great attempt.I guess I have a couple of questions after reading the intro and some of rest. 1. I didn't really understand Bryant's statement that Patanjali's God, Ishvara, is probably Brahman, the monist God of the Upanishads. Scholars have pointed out a distinction between Patanjali's, or at least Sankhya’s, dualist system, and the monist view of Brahman. So this is a little perplexing.2. Bryant makes the wonderful and I think accurate point that in the Samkhya/Yoga system it is Prakrti, not Purusa, that needs to be "enlightened", but sometimes the terminology gets confusing. For instance he later writes something like "consciousness can't see itself clearly when Prakrti is disturbed" It seems like he's talking about Purusa when he uses the word "consciousness," but it doesn't follow that Puruṣa will ever have a misperception. So, it would help to clarify this—idk, maybe I just need to look in the glossary, or read more carefully, but I wish the terminology was clearer.Bryant's assessment of Vedic culture is also a bit..well, unjustified. I mean, I just don't see how people singing songs praising water, the dawn, the earth, sky, and heavens, and so forth, can be called "consumerists" or "over-consumerists." They are basically asking for rain, children, long lives, and a good future life. There's nothing blameworthy in this. And the book misrepresents what some Upanisads actually say about the Vedic ritual.It's perhaps interesting to consider the social circumstances in which the Sutras and Samkhya developed, but a more likely source of dissatisfaction is to be found in the epics, especially the Mahabharata, which Bryant also discusses quite a bit. There, it's the battlefield that leads the heroes to seek out yoga.That aside, it is so great to see this book! I'm impressed with it and so glad he published it!

This book reports the results of a Rand study on the difficulties in determining what is true and what isn’t and how that affects our trust in institutions and in each other. It takes a good look at the blurring of facts and opinions, at cognitive bias, misinformation and changes in our information systems. Really interesting read. Makes me wish I was working on the follow up studies.

Thorough analysis of a timely and complex subject, though the writing style is rather academic. A bit like reading a scholarly journal, with extensive footnotes and attributions.

I enjoyed this book, it is a bit dry because it is a research document first and foremost. The topic is of course is timely to today's political and social problems, particularly the questions the authors asked and were keen on getting insight from. On a personal level I kept thinking and wondering though about one question they didn't ask: "Would people rather believe lies then face the truth about difficult issues that affect them?"

As is usual, RAND has taken a broad view of a complex topic of critical importance to government policy. Rich and Kavanagh strive for balance and data in an area where this is hard to find. As they note (repeatedly), much more research is needed before public policy changes should be made to address this critical problem. I feel this book clearly explains why public policy is needed to correct a growing problem that threatens the future viability of democratic government.

My daughter is a Mal fanatic. She wanted this for Christmas, but it was sold out everywhere. I was finally able to get it, and since other moms had expressed concerns about the content being appropriate, I decided to read it first.I'm VERY protective of her, and probably shield her more than I should. She's 7, so I did initially have concerns about the content being too mature. I found that the content was very normal and appropriate for kids, especially preteen/teen, which was the perspective from which it was written.You know your kid. If you find Austin & Ally to be too mature for your child, this book might be too mature for them, also. Otherwise, I don't see an issue. If you're concerned, read it first. If your child has a pretty good grasp on life, I didn't see anything in it that they would need shielded from seeing.

Got this book for my daughter, she loves it. Here is the cheapest price you will find it for. Book itself is hardcover and very nice. She carries it everywhere. It's like a real diary with doodle drawings and all. She loves the movie! Great book for the Descendants lover! Also it was bigger than I had thought, it has spells and everything. There are 191 pages. This book has held up and is still in great condition, and my 8 year old does bring it out a lot.

My kids, ages 8 and 7, are crazy for Descendants these days, and they love this book. It's supposed to be the spell book Mal uses in the first movie, but has also been used as a shared diary by the four main characters, who write commentary throughout -- basically, they tell the story of the movie in little notes to each other. Each of the four has their own handwriting, and my girls think it's really neat to get insights and secretly peek into their world, which is what this feels like. They even remember stuff the characters have written to each other when they watch the movie, so they feel like insiders. Obviously Disney has mastered the whole synergy thing here, along with the feeling of being in the club and in the know -- which, in this case, I don't mind at all because it's a cool book! And they're reading, so that's cool by me! They do need a little help, it's challenging for them at their age, but we look at it together.

My 10-year old daughter absolutely LOVES it! She saw it at another store and begged me to buy it. Of course it was $2 cheaper on Amazon, so I ordered it here :-) She devoured it in just a couple days. Any fan of Descendants will undoubtedly love this...

This book is very high quality, much more than I was expecting. My daughter is absolutely enthralled by it! The level of detail and artwork that is in it will keep an imaginative mind busy for hours. The pages are thicker than normal books (about double), the feel of the pages is slightly glossy but not overly so. Where there are graphics or artwork, it is a bit more glossy. The little notes and writings by Mel is a perfect detail to this book! A must for any Descendants fan!

This is really good quality (the cover is thick and has a soft, leathery feel). The book is well put together and my daughter loves all the little notes and things in it. Looks just like a real spell book that the character would keep.

I bought this for a friend's daughter, who loved the movie- and was impressed by the quality smooth hardcover binding and beautiful pictures. It's full of little fun quizzes and throwback quotes from the movie, with individualized signatures for each of the characters. Great value for the price. If you know someone who likes Descendants, this is sure to please.

Just what my daughter wanted. Contains all of Mal's little spells and notes. My daughter likes to pretend with it. Great little book...encourages reading!
