All you need is this book. I bought his indexing book also but this one covers it all. A good complete treatment by someone that seems honest, not-reckless, and on your side. Thank you Richard! My retirement is safer with these new investment vehicles called etfs.Goodby to broker miss-information and obfuscation. And I don't have to send a check to some unknown mutual fund in a far city, I can buy them from a local online broker without hidden loads.Finally the investment industry comes of age. About time. And the 1099 tax statement is finally provided each year by the online broker.

The book has useful fundamental and universally-applicable information that helps understanding the mechanics and inner-workings of ETFs and the market participants involved with ETFs. That's a "pro". One "con" is that I feel that the volume has been inflated by frequent and not well-warranted inclusion of particulars of specific individual products that are not relevant in the broad context. Those parts come across as distractions.

This is a great book for content: very thorough introduction to ETFs; compares ETFs to mutual funds and describes other exchange traded securities that may be confused with real ETFs. Recommended reading before getting into ETF investing. (Recommended supplementary work: the ETF section of morningstar.com. Note: I have no connection to Morningstar, just a long time user).About the Kindle edition: the Kindle formating is pretty bad. The line spacing compared to the type size is very close and tight, which makes for tiresome reading. Some books' formats simply don't seem to convert well for Kindle, and this is one of them.On the plus side for Kindle: all the tables and charts are readable; although you may need to look closely, the text is readable, which is more than I can say for some Kindle editions of books with charts & graphs.

The ETF Book: All You Need to Know About Exchange-Traded FundsI have been a long-term fan of low-cost, passive investing (i.e. index funds) and have read all of Mr. Ferri's books. Recently, I have begun using ETFs in place of index funds.Mr. Ferri's book is a well-researched, complete guide to ETFs. I believe it will be viewed as the definitive ETF book because of its wide-ranging coverage of everything from how ETFs can be used in a portfolio to details of ETF construction.The practical tips (e.g. don't trade an ETF at the beginning or end of a trading day) alone are worth the price of the book. Also, I really like the detailed information on how various ETFs (e.g. gold ETFs) are constructed.Great resource for individual investors as well as for professionals!

Rick Ferri has done it again. I got this book as I was looking actively for a good "introductory" book on ETFs. I already read Rick's "All About Asset Allocation" and like it very much. So I did not hesitate to preorder this book.This book does a great job in INTRODUCING indexing and ETF's. It covers a lot of ground about various types of ETFs their pros and cons. There are lot of finer points spread throughout the book which are interesting for people starting new and are hard to come across on web for an average web user like me - eg: pros and cons of Vanguard ETF (VIPER) structure where its ETFs are another class of shares of its index mutual funds. I would have rated this 5 stars except for some repetition of text multiple times in multiple chapters about types of indexing etc in Parts II and Part III of the book. Model portfolios section could have been dealt better.

A wonderful trip through ETFs. Book is well worth the money and I am sure worth more. Yet, while I'd suggest this book for any mutual fund investor, still, the more I read in this area the more I am convinced that I'll just "keep it simple" and stick with Dodge and Cox and Vanguard Funds ("admiral" or otherwise!) and probably Loomis-Sayles. Still, this book should be read by most mutual fund investors.Ferri's work is a credit to the field, surely a credit to him and I'll add a credit to Walsh College (where I believe Rick is on or was on the adjunct faculty).John

Thought he deserved a place in 2003 world cup but I also thought sachin, rahul and laxman could have taken turns to give chances to younger batsmen at least from the disastrous Australian tour of 2011...Nevertheless he played unbelievably amazing innings particularly against Australia and its fascinating to know they never sledged him while they didn't spare sachin when it comes to sledging. That shows the respect he has earned. Also liked how he shared his experiences, good and bad with coaches, his fun stories with teammates, good read. I still wonder if he can score 281 when no one believed we could win that test match, could he have done something very very special in the world cup 2003 if he was sent at number 3...

Took me back to my memory lanes. VVS shared his successes and struggles equally. He shared his struggles and he overcame than his wonderful successes which are so many. Blessed to watch his batting and equally privileged to read this book. Sad that book is over

For anyone who followed cricket during the era of Sachin-Saurav-Dravid-Laxman this is a must read book ....VVS Laxman has provided a very detailed narration of his cricketing journey. I used to always wonder why someone like him, who was so wonderful with the bat was not good at fielding? He provides answer to that & a lot more things in this book including his struggle as he was constantly dropped from the team (often without reason/explanation) ....I loved how he has dedicated an entire chapter to write specially about Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly Official, Rahul Dravid & Virender Sehwag .... some real interesting things are shared here & finally he writes about some amazing philanthropic work he is doing with his wife post-retirement ....When Laxman played, specially against the Aussies, he was a pleasure to watch. He details the epic innings of 281 which changed the course of test cricket. This is an amazing chapter to read, to understand what was going through his mind as he along with David achieved the impossible. I also loved his description of his 2010 test match again against Aussies where he played with the tail & secured us a win. I started the book with low expectations, but ended up learning a lot about cricket, performance management and the support needed to succeed at the highest level. VVS' brilliance extends to his writing as well. There is a lot one can relate to in one's own everyday life. A must read for a fan or anyone wanting to excel in sport.

Great read-aloud, but please know there are a number of very grown-up themes scattered throughout.

Historical fiction for middle grades does a nice job of relating the voyage of Megellan and his crew.

This will always be one of my absolute favorite books. What an incredible story this is! It takes you on such an amazing journey into another time and place and into the mindset of one of the most incredible explorers. Loved every sentence! A must read for adventure and history lovers.

Mateo Macias de Avila must learn to survive on his own after his parents die of the plague in 1519. Fourteen year old Mateo can draw, read, sing and play a guitar. These talents help him once he is recruited as cabin boy, musician, and eventually ship artist on a voyage led by Magellan.I found this book suitable for older children and young adults. Though the reading level is 5th-8th grade, the material is often at an older level. I would lean towards grades 7-9 as the youngest readers for this book.

To the Edge of the World is a great read that really satysfied me. It is based on real life events, even though some of the characters fictional. It is a tale of courage, comradery, and adventure. I reccomend it to anyone who likes books about the sea and/or adventure.

I started this trilogy because of all the great reviews. I finished this trilogy because once started, I wanted to know how it ended. Such a disappointment. Hobb repeated the historical information over and over and over and over....... until I gave up and began to skip sections that were repetitious. The main character Fitz was basically a screw-up, and did not improve with age, it was like he had "Loser" stamped on his forehead. I mean really, 3 books later and he still can't get anything right?! The most interesting characters in the book were the wolf and the "Fool". There are hours and hours and hours of conflict, but the resolution to the whole mess is summed up in about 1/2 hour, and Fitz doesn't even play a part in the resolution once it starts. This could have been a fantastic saga, but it wasn't.

Do you like books about suffering bastards (literally)? Do you like the protagonist to get his butt handed to him time and time again but somehow come out of it with only some scars and mild PTSD? Do you like the antagonist(s) to basically "win" all the time? Do you want to question the point in living when you finish the book? Then look no further because this is the book for you! But seriously, this book is very well written and the story is unique. It's hard to gripe an author for the themes they choose but I would have liked a little less depression, doom, and overall hopelessness for the protagonists of this story. Life is hard enough, people often read to escape, I don't need to read about how freaking horrible it is for our hero of the story. Honestly, in hindsight, I would NOT have read these books but after reading the first one and part of the second I was "committed."This is the only book, and series, I would rate 5 stars but tell everyone to avoid like the plague (getting the plague was probably the only bad thing that DIDN'T happen to the protagonist).**Mild Spoilers Below** (Not really)The books take an endless amount of time to go into detail of all the hardships but then speeds through anything remotely positive. Even the ending (which is mostly depressing) felt rushed and left me feeling empty inside... not a feeling I enjoy.

This continues the story of Fitz, Nighteyes, and the Fool during the reign of Regal. New characters and old cross paths with Fitz to tip the fate of the world. Has Verity survived, and will the Six Duchies follow a constructive path toward the future or a darker path, with or without help from Elderlings? Will Fitz grow up, master parts of himself and his magic, and overcome at least some of his old and recent traumas? Or will he continue in his closed in, stubborn, and at times impulsive ways, sacrificing his own and his wolf’s needs for loyalty to older men and to the Six Duchies? And where are the frigging dragons? As usual, the characterization is superb for a fantasy novel, and both Fitz and Nighteyes change in believable, touching, and at times amusing ways. The wolf often steals the show. After a somewhat tedious and slow beginning that caputes narratively the feeling of repetitiveness, stuckness, and timelessness of severe trauma, the plot pucks up. Much more hapens in this book than in its prequels, and the true power and complexity of the Skill and the Wit finally become revealed gradually to Fitz and to the reader. As in the previous books, there are occasional questionable decisions by some characters, that a discerning reader can tell the author made happen not because they make psychological or practical sense, but because they push forward the plot; these glitches in Hobb’s writing are generally easy to forgive in light of the novel’s overall strengths.

Robin Hobb’s Assassin’s Quest marks the end of what has become one of my favorite fantasy trilogies.The story picks up where the second book, Royal Assassin, left off. The king is dead, slain by treachery. Fitz is thought to be dead too, and he’s broken again, this time in mind as much as body. (Hobb is rather fond of battering her protagonist.) After a long convalescence, Fitz sets out to avenge the king and find his true heir.But the pacing remains slow, with a clear goal and some of the strongest fantasy elements (dragons and prophecies) only coming in now, in the third book. And the ending is less climactic than I expected: the final confrontations with the marauding Red Ship raiders and the king’s killer are both resolved in a few pages. Most of the story—more than usual—is about the journey to the solution rather than its application. There’s no glory for Fitz either. He’s not actually much of an assassin, but he still prefers working in the shadows, acting as an unrecognized catalyst. I also could have done with one fewer instance of Fitz being captured by and then escaping from his enemies.Worse, the balance between showing versus telling occasionally feels off. Hobb is brilliant at demonstrating how Fitz experiences the Wit (telepathy with animals) and the Skill (telepathy with humans). But each chapter begins with a note written after the fact by Fitz, mini-information dumps that either expand on a key mechanic or summarize events happening elsewhere at the time of the narrative. Often this works as an efficient way to convey necessary-but-tedious details. But occasionally the format feels repetitive and forced, as if Hobb wrote one of these mini-essays simply because she’d locked herself into doing so. And in the least-satisfying instances, some of the series’ great mysteries are resolved in this brisk manner.So why do I like the books so much? Because, despite everything I mentioned above, the story sings for me. The writing is beautiful, and Fitz and his wolf Nighteyes headline a cast of memorable characters. Thank goodness Hobb wrote other novels in this world. I’ll be back to read them, flaws and all.
