Fell in love with the little girl as she tells the story of how her Popo comes from China to help her make sense of all the "do" and "do nots" related to preparing for and celebrating this holiday. The little girl is real - enthusiastic and engaged but--as revealed in the text and illustrations-- struggles at points because the celebration requires her to "sweep out" bad thoughts even when her toddler brother is annoying her and she sometimes narrowly avoids committing "do nots" like writing with a red ink. (Why not? Red keeps away bad luck in the new year, right? But "writing in red ink means you want that person to go away"!!!) Very touching moments throughout as she engages with her brother and thinks through the many interwoven parts of this holiday. Loh-Hagan has introduced us to a character we will want to meet again while also introducing us to the beautiful aspects and meaning-driven intricacies of this holiday.
