I am sad. I purchased the entire series for possible addition to my Christian School elementary library, because the ratings seemed so high. They will be returned. I had hopes because the concept would be so appealing to my pre-teen boys and girls who love Superhero books, but who struggle with self-image and finding themselves. I love his writing style for these kids. He doesn't 'dumb down' some fantastic vocabulary. The presence of family and displays of tolerance for diversity, as well as the concept of good over evil, seemed initially solid. But then there were scenes that negated my inclusion of these books in our setting. A sixth grade boy lands in a simulation placing him in a saloon with an adult female at the bar. He drinks a Shirley Temple but there is beer served by a bartender to her and others around an under-aged kid trying to act like an adult in an illegal environment. The word 'freakin' to substitute for the f-word exists frequently, and we try to get our students to enhance expression, not to bite into cultural slang that some find offensive. I love that the boy ends up a hero and doesn't realize his powers initially. I love that the books ends with some self-reflection and realizations about his uniqueness. But frequently in the stories, however, he is disobeying his parents (including taking vehicles) with choices that result in his placement in danger where he overcomes successfully as the 'hero'. This sends a mixed message. Het gets grounded, a dumb consequence overused in today's culture that is ineffectual, even in this book. It doesn't stop him. There is a cruel death in front of him of his best friend and there are references to Russian-accented people as evil comrades ordered to kill him. We have a high population of Russian students. The second book actually places his mother and sister as evil twins in a parallel universe out to harm him. He gets confused over their sincere identities and trust. An Orb that enters his spirit pushes him to dangerous choices and becomes a threat to his life and others' lives as others try to steal its universal power to control. He becomes responsible for the life and death of all of creation. Whether this Orb is good or evil is in question. Entities are referred to as God, perhaps more powerful. "Chaos and Order" are considered both evil as they play a game to destroy people. Simply put...this story could have been just as exciting without these insertions to make it possible for me to include in our school setting. A little tweaking could have gone a long way. I wish R.L. Ullman could have asked someone like me to review his publication ahead of time to make this story worthy of diverse populations at this age, including the conservatives. It would not have harmed the tales one bit to be more careful and selective about approaches. We have fantasies and good-over-evil thrillers and science fiction, of course, and discuss tough fiction books with hard lessons from a Biblical Worldview. We do not coddle our kids. But these books cross a line for us and should discourage other parents interested in drawing a line, sending a message to authors that they do not have to do this to appeal to kids and to sell books. If you buy these books for your kids, just keep a space for parent/child discussion which may prove fruitful. In the future, R.L., please consider my input. You have limited a vital audience.

For Elliott Harkness this question needs to be answered on his twelfth birthday.Epic Zero is the story of a boy in a family of superheroes, except he has no powers. This is what they term a "Zero", while someone with powers is known as a "Meta". The "Metas" are split into eight categories based on what type of power they have, such as super strength or flight. Elliott does what he can to contribute to his family's fight against crime, but is left behind when a crime occurs.I liked the voice the author uses. Elliott's personality is displayed well, and he is a pretty likeable character. Since he has no powers and feels kind of like an outsider, it is easy for the reader to identify with him. He gains some confidence after making a new friend at school, and this ultimately leads him down a path of self-discovery.Some of the characters here are borrowed from other sources, although given different names and changed slightly. The author actually brings this up at one point in the story, which made it less corny for me. The villains could have been fleshed out better to make them more engaging. The showdown at the end was pretty satisfying given how the story builds to it.The book is definitely intended for younger readers, but the writing is good enough that even adults can enjoy it.

Such a fun, creative book with an interesting assortment of characters to pull you in. For me it ended up being a really quick read because I found myself wanting to know what would happen next. I'm already sharing it with several nephews who are the perfect age to appreciate it, and I hope this is the first of many books in this series. It's actually really fun to have "discovered" something to share with them!

It is an epic tale and a very good lesson not to judge someone by typical traits. It teaches this all whilst also keeping you engaged in an action packed book. Elliot is a 6th grader who's in over his head but still mages to find his way out of the trouble he's in with a little help from an alien friend. With all the self-hyping that goes on in this world, Elliot Harkness is a refreshing hero for the rest of us.He's also a great role model for kids growing up today. Even though he doesn't seem to possessthe qualities of greatness, he stays positive and keeps trying until he finally understands he has had something special in himall along.To say Epic Zero is filled with interesting characters is an epic understatement. It's like a Star Wars bar scene in every chapter.It's also filled with great action and lots of humor.The opening chapter is truly laugh out loud funny. Elliott wakes up on hisbirthday hoping to find he has developed some unique power like everyone else in his super hero family. No such luck. But because ofit, you're in his corner right from the start.

We LOVED this book! My third grader and I would read a little bit together each night, and one night (before I got to his room), he finished it off without me! He couldn't wait ... and me, well, I made sure to finish the book that evening because I myself couldn't wait to see what was going to go down in the latter half of the book. We could visualize everything as we were reading - it was so brilliantly written. And we loved seeing the profiles on different characters at the end of each chapter. And, as a parent, I love how things develop for the main character/narrator, who saw himself and was seen as a total zero but how in the end, he totally wasn't. It is such a common feeling for kid while growing up, it is hard for them to see that they themselves have superhero powers within, just like Elliott.

My just-turned-11 year old really enjoyed this series immensely. It was an easy, entertaining read that he was happy to take to bed with him.

Plain girl learns she's the chosen one. She goes into a magic school, has classes, deals with snobs. Becomes powerful and beautiful, but spends most of her time anguished over a love triangle.This is a rehash of many other books, nothing new here.It feels like half the book is about how people look, and only the beautiful people matter. Such a sad and stupid stereotype.

Set, and written, before the Six of Crows duology. If you’re going to read this trilogy, read it first or not at all. It’s not so much that Six of Crows spoils you for plot (though it does just a little) but more that Six of Crows will spoil you for richness of characters and depth of plot. Shadow & Bone just feels lacking in comparison - a little too plain, far too cliche, a little empty on characters, and far too short. Six of Crows simply sets reader expectations too high - better to start here and work your way forward with the author’s experience level.I won’t be buying the rest of this trilogy, but rather waiting for the author to write new works.

The land of Ravka has been decimated by the Shadow Fold; a mysterious consequence of dark magic which blights the landscape in monsters and darkness. The people of this tormented land have not known peace for generations.While attempting to cross the fold, Army cartographer Alina Starkov finds her transport attacked by the monsters that dwell within. Faced with near-certain death, Alina calls upon a hidden power, and manages to push back the darkness. Returning to non-blighted land, Alina learns that she is a Grisha (witch/mage), and that she may be the only one who can save Ravka from the Shadow Fold. Suddenly thrust into the aristocratic world of the Grisha and Ravka court politics, Alina must master her gift, while at the same time learning to navigate the treacherous waters of court life.This is YA done right. Books like this keep me coming back to the genre when I feel that reading one more angsty book will drive me mad. The plot (this is the first installment in a trilogy) is well executed. The characters are still in their nascent phase, but show great promise. The requisite love triangle feels a bit more realistic than most entries in the YA genre.I especially enjoyed the way magic is handled, and the care the author shows in her world building. Bardugo has put together a grand vision, and she has the skill to translate that vision into a gorgeous work of fantasy. The story actually reminds me a bit of the Black Magician Trilogy by Trudi Canavan, another fantastic series in YA Fantasy.Fans of the young adult genre, young adult fantasy, and fantasy in general will enjoy this series. Even those who don’t typically read things in the YA sphere will find a lot to like in this book; it is technically a young adult novel, but it doesn’t read like one. I can’t wait to read the other books in the series.

Ms. Bardugo really has a talent with storytelling mixed in with magic and humor. I love the universe she created with its Russian words, background, culture. The harshness of being an orphan, the luxuries of the Court all really come together in a rich fantasy oil painting. Not too much detail, not too much magic theory, not too much dread and despair. It was an easy read.That aside, I couldn't really like the characters. I thought I liked the diamond-in-the-rough heroine but she never really pulled through to get her act together until the very end of this novel. She was constantly being pushed, shoved, led by others. She was easily deceived, and deceived even herself. You would think that after all this time she would figure out who she was and what she wanted. She is no longer a child but she is constantly looking to others to give her the answers.The character development was really a mixed bag of "aha!" moments the author drops like candies on the floor. No real warning, just suddenly the heroine discovers why she's so brilliant (no pun intended), the hero suddenly decides he loves her, and the villain whom I was really cheering for went from a multi-dimensional puzzle box to a textbook villain with no soul. Ugh. Disappointment central.The ending wrapped up so quickly it literally took half a chapter and one afterward to wrap it up. One moment it was all confrontation tension, the next, a miraculous resolution because the heroine just figured it all out. The problem with the big reveal is that she never really cared about anything. Not her work. Not her co-workers. Not her life. Not even her health/appearance. She lived her entire life just numb; without hope or joy, just pining after a childhood friend. She obsessed about her childhood friend as if her universe revolved around him, and despite everything that happens to her and everything she's discovered about herself she still clings to him in the end even though we were supposed to believe she completely broke free of that mold many chapters ago.So she makes a choice, willing to sacrifice all else, including the friends she didn't think she could make and innocent people, to get her HEA. What makes her so different from the enemy, then? In the next book I'm supposed to believe she wants to fight a madman and save the country (she never really care for or fit in anywhere) and its people (she never really had any connection to)? Yeah, I'm thinking I'll just let her do that without me. I'm done Alina. Have fun with that.The novel was rather short, as well. I think all three could really be reduced to two books, but for the greed of the publisher, we're forced to pay a tall price three times. The first 70% of this book was decent, but I'll save my money and read something else.

I LOVED the Six of Crows duology and was really excited to read this one, but the tone is so different, it was somewhat deflating. I loved the lore and the world, but Alina's awkwardness and her complete lack of confidence, along with the romantic elements of the book were sooo different from Kaz and his crew. I felt as if this was written for a younger audience than Six of Crows.It's still a good story and if you love ya fantasy romance, I'm sure you'll love it! I'm just an action junkie and this had more romance and awkwardness than action. I'm sure the pace of the next books will pick up (and I'm guessing dramatically) once we focus more on the action and the world of the Grisha (which I'm completely in love with!)Leigh is an extremely talented author and I have every faith that, in the end, this book will be a whirlwind of a ride!

This e-book was useful while studying for my CCNP Security, specifically exam 300-208. I used this book in conjunction with rack rentals & video courses, and Cisco documentation. While you can’t go wrong with Cisco documentation, this book comes with configuration walkthroughs with diagrams/screenshots. If you’re fortunate enough to be using some of the technology covered (ISE especially assuming you have licenses for features like Profiling & Posturing), you can follow along. The book in my opinion is also a nice reference to have, especially since it covers a lot of information about Cisco ISE (Identity Services Engine). With that being said for those not aware (I wasn’t), this book is almost word-for-word with the Official Cert Guide CCNP Security SISAS 300-208; even the diagrams/screenshots.So I wasted some money in the end. Co-writer Aaron T. Woland helped create both books.3 Stars only because of what I mentioned about the Cert Guide. Perhaps this was mentioned in a previous review and I missed it.

My comment is regarding printed edition. Many images are of bad quality, sometimes unreadable. Maybe electronic version is better.There are cheaper books with lot of high quality color photo images.Content seems to be OK.

Very detailed and well thought out book. Super useful as ISE can be pretty complex.
