It is sad that thousands of people who helped build Zanzibar were killed in 1964. After the killing AKA revolution, Zanzibar became unsafe city, per the author who visited Zanzibar after years from the revolution, everything spiraled down since the mascara of 1964.

This book, written by State Department employee Don Petterson, discusses the 1964 revolution in the tiny African country of Zanzibar. The island state had just come from under the British umbrella as a protectorate and was ruled by a Omani Sultan and dominated by an Arab minority. In the bloody revolution which swept the Arabs out of power a small clique from the African majority took over. Petterson was there and wound up as the only American official left on the island, trying to look out for the property of U.S. citizens as well as a space tracking station which had been built on the island of Zanzibar. The book is fascinating in that it shows how Cold War thinking skewed State Department thinking, losing opportunities to influence the situation and provide stability. A very good read and includes some black and white photos in the text.

I was an American teacher in the new secondary school on Pemba during in the 1963 Zanzibar revolution. The British army was stationed at our school during the election and I enjoyed the Uhuru celebrations on Chake Chake. After the revolution, I was housed at the King George IV School grounds until deported as an American "spy" just before it was announced the Zanzibar was part of the new Tanzania. The book answered a lot of questions I had 50 years ago thanks to the author.

"Revolution in Zanzibar: An American's Cold War Tale" by Don Petterson is the story of the before, during, and after of Zanzibar independence (from Britain), self-rule, revolution, and union with Tanganyika (to form the current Tanzania). Petterson was the only U.S. State Department official who was there the entire time. He tells the story of the various political players on all sides: the "Arab" rulers and elites who lost power; and the "African" revolutionaries who took it; the British officials -- old "African hands", and the Americans, eager to support democracy but wary of communist influence. Briefly, Zanzibar and its bloody revolution was on the front pages, but soon it was forgotten. Petterson tells of not only the international diplomatic calculations, but also writes about the day-to-day life of a diplomat in a far away place and time, and relates some of the history and atmosphere of a real place that many Americans might equate with Shangra-la or Xanadu. Illustrated with historic photographs. Well worth reading for the East Africa enthusiast or historian of U.S. diplomacy. And it has a great ending!

Mr. Petterson has presented us with a very interesting and personal view of the Cold War from one of its more obscure and exotic locales. This book presents an interesting account of politics in 1960s East Africa through the eyes of the only US official to remain on the island of Zanzibar throughout the revolution. It describes the union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar and dispels some of the myths surrounding the revolution. The author also provides interesting insight on the early careers of some of the notable figures to emerge in US and African politics including Frank Carlucci, Thomas Pickering, and Julius Nyerere. Anyone who is interested in East African politics or the East-West face off during the cold war should read this book. It is a great addition to any political science library.

This book is great! It gives a American diplomatic eye-view of the scene in Zanzibar before, during, and after the revolution.Is it totally accurate? I would really have no easy way to verify it anyways. Is it biased? Perhaps. But from everything I can see, Donald does a fine job and seems to report things very fairly.He seems to be more concerned about reporting facts than putting a "spin" on things or giving interpretations, which is a good thing! Far from being "bland", this book is written very well and did a fine job of captivating my attention.Please do yourself a favour, if you are interested in the often turbulent history and politics of East Africa, get this book!

One hears many stories of how life is lived in exotic countries, as well as the impact the cultures of those countries has on a person. Calling one's servants by first name was just the way things were done; not in the manner of "boy" or "man", but in the manner of friendship. Also, a certain detachment is inevitable due to working in an Embassy or Consulate, as well as the people that one works with. Of course, there are diplomats who take NO initiative in learning about or experiencing another culture. Ambassador Petterson does not seem like this type at all.This book allows a glimpse into the life of a lone American in a highly dangerous diplomatic situation. An almost unknown country and historical event unfolds through the pages, and we learn about the fringe of the Cold War, where one small island is contested between the Super Powers. An excellent read.

Honestly, I found the writing a little boring. I felt it was more like facts being spit out than letting me getting to know the real Christian Dior.In addition, the writing shares a page in English and French and the English is SO much smaller than the French it is hard to read and after awhile hurts my eyes.Full of some beautiful photos though.

All along, I learned a lot about Alzheimer's and how it affects the lives of patients and their family members. And I came to love Jamie, my soon to be 18-year-old girl cat, even more...

I have a loved one with Alzheimer's Disease.I have read many clinical books on the disease in this past year. It's a lot to take in when this diagnosis is made. This person whom I've loved, cared about and who has been an important part of my life, is fading away. It can be a helpless feeling.Dr. Dosa, takes a unique approach to his description of both disease and the impact on family and caregivers alike. This was written in the early part of his career and shares his feelings and thoughts on patient care in the skilled nursing facility where he practices.This candid book is told in clinical anecdotes, as well as the story of Oscar, the cat.This is a far gentler approach than many of the AD books I've read. It's very real, yet passionate about treating patients with dignity and respect. These last two get more difficult as the disease progresses.Animals have a real soothing effect on AD patients. My little Maltese has the ability to sense who, in a room of ten people, needs her most. She will then cuddle up to them. I've seen how well it calms my own loved one with AD. I guess Charlie Brown was right...happiness IS a warm puppy.This book handles the concept of skilled nursing facility as a place for a loved one with A.D. Certainly, we've come a long way in our nursing care for patients in the last stages of their lives.Dr. Dosa also mentions skilled nursing at home. Having researched this option for my loved one, I know that the time to look into it is BEFORE a fall or illness that substantially weakens a loved one.How do you find the right skilled nursing facility or home care? Ask your family doctor or primary care practitioner. They are required to see their patients on a regular basis. Our own family doctor recommended the service I plan to use for my loved one. He used the same for his own mother.One last thought...there is a story of a woman who had a very close relationship with her loved one. Her approach is similar to what I've embraced. She saw her time with her loved one as a gift. Time IS a precious commodity. As hour after hour tumbles into days, months and years, we remember the people in our lives, not the things.

This is a very well written account of this Doctor's experiences with a cat who had an extraordinary ability. As he thoroughly investigates the phenomenon he becomes convinced. He also gives us a good look at the geriatric care facility he worked with and the staff and seniors who populated it. This is a one-sitting read, he keeps you interested and engaged. He does a great job when describing his interactions with the staff, families, and the patients at the facility as well as his own inner dialog. His empathy and understanding of these people is extraordinary and it comes out in the writing,It's not only about a special cat but also about a wonderful facility with a great staff and interesting patients.

Making Rounds with Oscar (the hospice kitty) as seen through the eyes of Dr. David Dosa, is delightful and heart-warming. I particularly love the subtitle, The Extraordinary Gift of an Ordinary Cat. Dr. Dosa takes the reader along on his journey of discovery; namely, cats possess sentience. Oscar, in particular, comforts the terminally ill patients in his hospice home. He does not fail; he knows exactly when to arrive for his person and when to leave. Oscar's self-appointed job allows no one in his personal care to die alone. And he knows what he is doing. The story is a beautiful confirmation for anyone who has been privileged to live with such a cat. Confirmation of a feline's gifted awareness and subsequent behavior from a medical man is a comforting read indeed.

A very nice book about an amazing cat. The author is a gerontologist who heard d about the unusual activities of one of the home's cats whenever someone was about to die. He questioned a number of the family members who, like Oscar the cat, were present at the death of their loved ones, or who were unable to be there but were happy to know that Oscar was there, keeping watch over their loved ones until the coroner left. During his investigation of the cat, the doctor learned a great deal about how people learn to care for their loved ones and how they cope with the emotional losses, and the physical losses as well. As an adult with a mother with Alzheimer's, the book was helpful, heart breaking at times, and entertaining. And, yes, at the end, I also prefer the cat, not the ICU.

Heartwarming and tear jerking, this book really touched me since my dad had Alzheimer's. Dr. Dosa writes moving stories about how his patients and their families dealt with their loved one's illness and eventual deaths, but throughout it all he recognizes the important "job" Oscar had and how dutifully this astonishing cat carried out his role, while teaching humans a lesson in caregiving. A beautiful tribute to an amazing animal with an incredible gift. Makes me proud to be a cat lover!
