Greenwald delivers a scathing review of the United States' broken legal system in this book from 2012. Known for his powerful, smart critiques of greater powers, the author quickly points out how unequal the justice system is between the economic elite and everyday citizenry. From Bush's epic plundering of Iraq and horrific torture regime to Obama's droning of the Middle East and silencing of whistleblowers to the financial calamity of 2008, Greenwald analyzes how each group has avoided legal action -- even helping to rewrite laws and provide retroactive immunity to criminals.Much of the book covers well tread territory, though. I've read books on all of these major topics from "Dirty Wars" to "The Big Short" that chronicle the terrifying rise of income inequality, totalitarian war powers, and unequal justice. Greenwald tends to scratch the surface on all these areas, rather than going into greater detail. Two-thirds of the book is dedicated to primarily the executive branch's wrongdoings, which felt frustrating. I expected there to be more emphasis on those most disenfranchised by the inequality.Greenwald, as always, is a skillful writer and columnist. His words ring true and research proves his point: the justice system is broken, but we can improve it. Two stars removed due to the aforementioned points regarding novelty of coverage and depth for poorest classes who are suffering most.

I became aware of Glenn Greewald because of his involvement with Edward Snowden. It turns out, he's a great author as well.With Liberty and Justice for Some is a well-researched and well-argued book about how politicians and large business owners very literally rule our country and are not bound by the same laws as us. Several examples are used to support this argument: The Bush administration wasn't punished for torturing people, communications companies weren't punished for selling user information to the government. The book touches upon many ideas that Snowden would confirm later on.Be a responsible citizen and read this book. Support Greenwald. He argues from fact and his facts are trenchant.

Glenn Greenwald forces us to acknowledge what we already know and are reluctant to admit: the rule of law no longer exists in our country. He lays out in exquisite detail evidence that there exist two tiers in our justice system whereby the rich and powerful are immune from prosecution for almost any crime while the plebes are subject to ever more draconian punishments via the very same system where equal justice is supposed to be meted out to all. After reading this book, one wonders how any citizen can even bother voting when the very representatives we elect to represent our interests exert themselves to rewrite laws to provide protection for their paymasters. A vote is essentially an endorsement; is it really one's civic duty to to endorse by voting for him the questionable behavior of a politician? This is not a question raised in this book but the facts presented are indeed so disturbing that it is a valid question. An excellent piece of work by a true patriot.

Read "Liberty and Justice for Some" and you will know this is not true (in case you missed the immunities granted to Wall Street and banks who defrauded the nation and brought us to our knees).I lived through the events described in this book. I did not want to see the pattern that is so evident, but now I torture myself with the text because--unless we the not-powerful unite to change the judicial system someone we care about could be next.That is why I wrote "Accidental Felon." I want readers who might not read Silverglate's" Three Felonies a Day" or "Liberty and Justice for Some" to know there is a two-tier system in our courts, the lower tier for most of us, and the higher tier for the elite who have tremendous power and are permitted to do anything--in violation of our Constitution.This book makes it crystal clear.

Mr. Greenwald makes the case, and I think very well that equality under the law is illusionary for most of us. A corporation in trouble with the law? Just get you friends in congress to change the law. Malfeasance in office, high crimes and misdemeanors? Not to worry, your fellow politicians in congress and the White House will poor oil on the waters regardless of party. Like many authors, Mr. Greenwald is branded as a liberal or leftist but what he really is is a journalist looking for the truth. You will not find him soft peddling on the Democrats nor Republicans and he provides enough context and factual examples to make hard hitting and important points on the corruption of a bedrock tenet of American principal.

Glenn Greenwald reminds us that we have a Constitution whose framers thought wisely and carefully about what laws would be required to ensure Liberty and Justice for ALL. This book was a good idea. It helps to explain what it really means to be Muslim, especially in America. But its intentions of bringing support and tolerance to Muslim beliefs and behaviors is undermined by the arguments of the author. Too many remarks are hostile or laced with malice. Too often the author criticized Americans and American policy and how it has affected Muslims. I'm not saying the author is wrong, but this approach is not going to breed sympathy. There's surely a better alternative out there.

Tons of data and numbers and justifications but little or no insights the title suggests. It's pretty aggressive and defensive. I was hoping for something informative and neutral. It is not. If acceptance comes from understanding... find another book.

A Muslim perspective on Western-Muslim relations during the first 8 or so years of the 21st century. We need to hear more like this, even if we might not agree with all of it.

This book is perfect for those who know little about the Muslim world. It is very relevant to today considering the Mosque in New York and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. I hope everyone that reads this book enjoys it as much as I have.

This is an extraordinary frank and honest look at what it means to be Muslims. It does not dodge hard questions that Muslims face about their religion, nor does it flinch from helping non-Muslims feel the sense of threat that Muslims often feel. It is unfortunate that toward the end the author's defensiveness comes through too much.

Hugo Wilcken is a Paris-based, Australian-born writer and translator. His first novel, The Execution, was published by HarperCollins in 2002. "Low" is by far my favorite David Bowie album, and maybe my favorite album of all-time. Wilcken's book is short, but packs more of a punch than many (actually all) of the larger volumes about this specific period in the mercurial musician's development. This book is jam-packed with info about Bowie's descent into cocaine-fueled madness during his "Thin White Duke" period, on into his miraculous recovery and redefinition of himself and his sound in Berlin. There is a lot of good technical info about how Tony Visconti achieved those beautifully distorted drum sounds on songs like "Speed of Life" and "Sound and Vision," as well as some choice nuggets about minimalist maestro Brian Eno. The writing is rich without being too self-indulgent, which is always a risk with music journalism (see Lester Bangs). Highest recommendation.

This is a smart little book about David Bowie's album Low, which is one of his finest and strangest records (recently winning an online poll among Bowie fans ranking Bowie's best albums).In a hundred-odd pocket-sized pages, Hugo Wilcken covers the recording of the album in appropriate detail and takes the time to talk about each individual song. He also explores the lead-up to Low, starting with Bowie's previous album, Station to Station, as well as the Iggy Pop album The Idiot, which Bowie produced and co-wrote (and first experimented with some of the sounds used on Low). For such a small book, there's a wealth of information in these pages, and Wilcken writes it all in a clear, easy-to-follow style. There are a few things I'd expect from a book like this: a description of the way the album was made, detailed but not concerned with trivia; analysis of the music itself, detailed but not overblown; biography of the artist, at least enough to understand where the album came from. This book has all of that. It's difficult for an entire book about a single album to be intriguing from start to finish, but this mostly manages.Highlights included: a solid description of just where Bowie was, mentally, when he made the album (a description which does a lot to explain the album's unique mood). Explanation of the album's influences, with focus on acts like Kraftwerk and Neu!, as well as the ways the album connects to its predecessor, Station to Station. If you're a hardcore David Bowie fan, a lot of it is already familiar to you; if you love the album but don't know anything about its history, it's a must-read. There's nothing "ambitious" about the book--it's no more or less than the story of Low--but it does its job well.

This book will stir you up and get you excited about the artistic creative process. It's reads like a novel and there is not a boring moment in the book. Outstanding. Check out Brian Eno's new album Lux as a companion to reading this book. Along with Low of course. Both masterpieces.

Excellent look at both the making and meaning oof Bowie's Low album, but also a peek at the significance of the record in predicting the future of rock music. Well-written and well-worth reading for a fan of Bowie or of rock history in general.

This is perhaps the finest, most detailed analysis of Bowie's work I've ever read, and I earnestly entreat the author to consider taking on the remainder of the Berlin trilogy albums. In spite of the minor error or three (that's Walter Tevis who wrote The Man Who Fell To Earth, not Travis), this book answers so many questions I've always wanted to ask about "Low"-- which is saying a lot, as this has remained one of the most important albums of all time to my own musical work. Great stuff!

I completely recommend this book along with the "Pushing Ahead of The Dame" blog if you want to know more about Bowie and arguably the finest and most significant of all his albums.It's a light but engaging read that can be done with in an afternoon and that's part of my only complaint really, i wish it was still more explicit about the working process and credits but it does pretty much covers everything.

Hugo Wilcken does an excellent job of bringing on the ambience of Bowie's world, circa mid 70s, not only focusing on the first disc of the Berlin Trilogy, Low, but capturing the mindset of the world in which Bowie lived, one full of drugs, Iggy Pop's The Idiot, Station to Station and so much more. Informative, not quite perfect, but too good not to give the full five stars and my personal fave of this series so far.JCS

Child education and counseling expert Erainna Winnett brings more than 20 years of experience in teaching, counseling, and raising children to the hot-button issues every child faces today. Helping Kids Heal is a series of activity books written with healing in mind. Each book addresses real world problems children face on a daily basis. I do not write reviews but in this case I'm making an exception. I have spent a good portion of my holiday break absorbing the lessons from this material and applying them to my Power BI models. I hadn't intended to spend so much of my vacation working the exercises but I found that each chapter explored a new idea and each left me wanting to know more. I would put the book down for a couple hours but between all the food and family I kept escaping to my quiet place to 'check' the next chapter. There is no coal in this book.On New Years evening I tried to open it again but got dirty looks from my sweetie. But honey, I explained, this is the champagne that turns my ugly work days into gold. She squeezed my hand (the one with the mouse in it), looked deep into my eyes and told me it's time to Collect, Combine, and Transform.

Power Query is a great tool, but there’s so much to learn! How do you transform data while avoiding pitfalls? You could learn the hard way, like I did. I read other books, blogs, and watched videos. I also used Microsoft help docs. I love how this book empowers readers. The book teaches in Excel 2016 and Power BI, but the skills can be used in other Microsoft tools. Power Query is in SSAS Tabular as well as in Dataflows. It is also available in Excel 2010 and 2013.This is a complete guide to Power Query. Gil orders the book along key goals. For example, basic data prep, preserving context, and collaboration. This order not only streamlines learning, but it also teaches key concepts. The book begins with the user interface. From there, it leads into editing formulas. It also deftly supports best practices for data models. Only after this base does it introduce M code. And from there, it delves into pitfalls, text analysis, and social media.However, this book is not only for the novice. It’s filled with all kinds of gold for the adept. In the first half of the book, I learned at least five cool things. And even if you know plenty, it is always great to get a high level view and fill in the gaps. For me, it is one of the essential books for Microsoft self-help data tools.What this book is not. It's not an intro to Excel or Power BI. This book will not teach you DAX or data modeling. For that, I recommend Power Pivot and Power BI: The Excel User's Guide to DAX, Power Query, Power BI & Power Pivot in Excel. In addition, there are a number of techniques that I use which are not covered in the book. For that, I read blogs. At some point, Gil or someone may write a definitive guide to Power Query.So, I’m looking forward to improving my grasp of the basics. And I’m also eager to learn even more. I’m glad to have this book on my desk even if my colleagues want to borrow it now and then.

Where was this book last year when I really needed it? Oh yeah, it didn't exist yet! This terrific book has given my Power Query fumblings a new direction and confidence. Although I had been using PQ for about a year, this book has given me a quantum boost forward in understanding how it works. In particular it has helped me solve a knotty challenge in connecting to a data source on SharePoint. It provides example files and exercises, which I have not worked through yet, but I can follow along in the text. I am recommending it to every power Excel user I know. Anyone who has to pull in lots of data, or inconsistent data, or dirty data will appreciate Power Query.I pledge to always use the power of Power Query for good, not evil. And this book will help you unleash that formidable power!

As someone that does not have a database background my mantra was “just get the data into Excel and I can fix it there!” I doubt I am alone out there on that one. So, a lot of my job was basically doing the same thing over and over in order to produce some sort of final report. Not only is that incredibly boring but that boredom often leads to errors. A report that is built on errors is at best useless and at worst people take action on that report, and that is recipe for some “interesting” discussions down the road. Discussion I’d much rather not have. So why not build something once and then use that over and over, automatically? That is exactly what Power Query is meant to do.When first encountering the Power Query it seems close to excel (more like excel adjacent) but for someone who is more or less an excel expert, the differences become quickly apparent. Differences that at first can be intimidating. But the way Gil start slow and ramps up to more advanced topic makes it is no longer intimidating. Power Query goes from intimidating to “guess this is ok” to “oh, I see how this can work” to “this is awesome!” to “I wonder if I could do xyz?”. The files that come with the book will always be there for your reference too. I think most would be best served to do active learning with this book. Reading it in bed or wherever is fine, but I’d go back and go step by step and actually do it. It’s like learning to swim. You can read every book on the topic, but till you are in the water you will not actually learn.Also, if you are venturing into the world of DAX, using Power Query to transform your data makes the DAX so much easier to write. And with these streamlined DAX formulas, they are faster, prone to less errors, and much easier to troubleshoot when errors to appear.With that being said, Power Query (and the M language) does have its challenges. But these challenges are what makes it fun. Much like a lot of things in life you get out of it what you put in. I have no doubt that just the first few chapters will transform (no pun intended...) your day to day tasks. I also have no doubt that once you get done with those first few chapters, you won’t want to stop.

I learned something new in almost every chapter.In addition, Gil Raviv the author, emails Bonus exercises to expand your skill. Since it was coming up on St. Patrick’s Day, I wanted to read a book along that theme on the day of the 17th. I thought it would be fun. I normally don’t pick theme books to read on that specific holiday (except Christmas or Halloween) and I wanted a change of pace. It was still a cozy mystery, so it wasn’t completely out of my wheelhouse.Lucy Stone was out doing what Lucy Stone does… finding dead bodies. She didn’t actually find this one herself, mind you but coming upon the scene where the owner of a local bar washes up dead on the shore of Tinker’s Cove on the Maine coast is close enough. Her reporter instincts click into gear immediately.The body can’t be identified immediately due to the fact the corpse was missing its head. But they all assumed it was Old Dave, the owner of the Bilge, since the bar had been unexpectedly closed for the prior three days, much to the patron’s dismay.Strangely enough, on the day Old Dan’s body is discovered, his brother, Dylan showed up with his family to direct a theatre production for the local church. There are more suspects around each corner: disgruntled patrons and a man who claims Dave stole his winning lottery ticket.It was an interesting ride. Sometimes Meier’s stories can be hit or miss but I thought this offering was a particularly good one. Great plot that kept you guessing, characters you sometimes wanted to throttle and a great writing flow.I look forward to reading more of Meier’s work and i do have quite a few tucked away in my Kindle for a rainy day.Definitely check this one out.

My review is based on the fact that the copyright stated is 2019. However, this is a reissue of the book which was originally released in 2009. This is the second time I have ordered one of Ms. Meirs’ books that are not advertised as reissues. I wish Amazon would denote the original publishing dates.

Lucy Stone is a great character who works for the town newspaper. She also likes to help the police (not too happy) solve murders. This is a duzzy and for a cozy a little gory. I had to skip over a few paragraghs that were too much information for me. Old Dan Malone is found dead in the water, his long lost brother, wife and neice show up out of the blue from Ireland - and the plot thickens. Leslie Meier really kept me guessing. There was a lot of Irish folklore, mostly stuff you wouldn't want your kids to hear about and certainly not believe as anything but myth. So, I guess, although I enjoyed the story and solving the crime, parts of it not to my taste. But the setting was quaint and it was good for an afternoon by the fire. Lucy Stone is a good sleuth.

I really like this series and I really like the beautiful state of Maine in which they are set. I'm not sure if the author took license here or not, but the state of Maine doesn't have a Lieutenant Governor making it one of five states that do not. :)I enjoy the character and the way she's written. Sometimes I solve them and sometimes I don't; this one I figured out "who" but not why, but not until I was 3/4 of the way through the book.

This installment in the Lucy Stone series is the best one yet. It is obvious the author did a lot of research on the Celts and Irish culture. Set around the St. Patrick's Day holiday, the author gives us that inside look into modern family life and issues that we all face daily. The book hold your interest while Lucy solves yet another murder. Lucy seems more together and polished in this book. She pays attention to detail and sees things the police do not see. This not only helps her solve the murder but helps her save a life. I am already looking forward to the next novel by Leslie Meier. Well done!

I always enjoy Leslie Meier stories. The only ones I read now. She has written many books.

I read the book and finished it without a struggle. Did not have a lot of life to it and I could not have cared less about the characters. I am not sure if I would tell anyone to read it but it was not bad. I can't remember if I paid for this or it was a free book. I would pay $.99 for it. You can figure it all out from almost the beginning without any real thought. Was an easy read I may try another by this author to see if the others are better.

A quick moving story with no idea how it would end. I was glad Moiria did foul up the play.
