This well-written historical biography chronicles the life of Peter Siebert, growing up in a suburb of Boston, his lifelong love of skiing, his sacrifices for his country on the mountains of Italy during the war, his perseverance at overcoming his physical wounds and scars, and his determination to find his own mountain where he could develop a ski destination of his dreams. I found it to be a quick read, but full of information about thousands of soldiers who undertook a mission I had never heard about before, and an inspirational story of one man's journey to pursue his lifelong dream, no matter what obstacles he faced. Mrs. Borden's unique style of writing and voice make this an easy and interesting story for juveniles (and adults) and and leaves you with a warm feeling.
My brother and nephew are special ops, so this title topic caught my eye. I also teach writing and Children's Literature at the college level, so I'm always on the lookout for innovative ways to tell stories to young readers. Poetry may not be the first choice of most kids interested in war and/or skiing. But this true WW2 story of Pete Seibert and the 10th Mountain Division that broke through the German line in the Appenine peaks benefits from the spare music of poet Louise Brooks. As a teacher, I can discuss alliteration and consonance as well as imagery and tension in the following lines alone: As more shells shook the walls,/the medics pulled Pete under the table/and huddled beside him. The "L" sounds ring in my ears, as the artillery must have in Pete's. In addition to his heroics, Pete's recovery from his serious injuries to become one of pioneers of commercial skiing is inspiring. And I'm not even a skier! Bravo, veterans! Bravo, Brooks!
Review: This book is a memoir, written in verse form about Pete Seibert, a passionate skier who enlisted in the 10th Mountain fighting in combat on skis in the mountains of Italy in World War II. He and many of his division were injured or killed. Pete was devastatingly injured in the war and sent home, but he was determined to heal and do the work so that he could return to and return to skiing. Later he fulfilled his childhood dream and developed a famous ski resort in Vail, Colorado. This very well written book is very informative. Written in verse form makes it easy to read and it will not overwhelm or intimidate readers. It provides very good information about a division in World War II of which many are not aware. Black and white photographs are used throughout the text which enhances the biography.Recommendation: This book is recommended as a very good book of note for any middle or high school library; informs and engages readers.
