What an amazing book!!! Pace is a great writer and draws you in to the wonder of the Alaskan wilderness. I was captivated by her story and reminded of my own strengths. A well-written portrait of an amazing life.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves dogs, Alaska, and adventure. The author openly shares her exhilarating highs as well as the devastating lows throughout her memoir. It's a real joy to read, and the author holds nothing back!
This Much Country is a memoir written by Kristin Knight Pace. When she was in high school, she met a boy online. She was in Texas and he was in Montana, but their relationship blossomed and shortly after she graduated from high school, she drove to Montana to be with him. She stayed in college and graduated with honors, moving between Montana, Colorado, Alaska, and Seattle, with her husband, Alfred and their two dogs. The young marriage was not meant to be, mostly because their jobs kept them apart for months at a time. Alfred began seeing a woman he worked with and asked for a divorce, more or less. That's the break-up part, and really, where the story begins. Or should. After that, the author takes a job in a remote area of Alaska, house-sitting a cabin and pet-sitting a pack of sled dogs. While this adventure type book is right up my alley and I have read several books about people and their dogs on the Iditarod, the content was a bit juvenile for my taste. The author speaks in sentences for her dogs, and puts those sentences in quotes, quite frequently, in her writing. That's a bit too cute for my taste. It detracts from the story, in my opinion. The last sentence I could bear was when one of her dogs was quoted as saying "Maybe rhen dat tall guy is gone, Mom, you could take some of dose sred dogs to da pound." Those aren't typos, mind you, but actual copy from the book. That's just not for me.So it seemed like this would be a good children's book, but there are some parts that aren't necessarily suitable for children.I am sure many people would love this book. Especially people who love their dogs like children. I am more interested in the story telling without embellishment. It's just not my writing style.
I’ve read a lot of books about sled dog racing and this is not among my favorites. It’s less detailed than most and focuses much more on the author’s personal life than on the dogs. There aren’t enough details to give it a “you are there†feeling. I never got to know the dogs that she worked with. The book is written in more of a young adult style than the books I have listed below.Iditarod fans might be interested to know that Pace worked for Jeff King and ran some of his dogs. Some similar books that I preferred to this one: Cold Hands, Warm Heart, by Jeff King himself; Mad Dogs and an Englishwoman, by Polly Evans, which is a much more entertaining and informative book; Running with Champions, by Lisa Frederic, a similar book but much more about the dogs and the day to day experience; and Race Across Alaska: First Woman to Win the Iditarod Tells Her Story, by Libby Riddles. But that’s JustMe.
I really like this book. I’m not sure if it is because it’s an autobiography or her ability to write (probably both), but Ms. Pace really draws you into her story. Also with a true story it can be difficult to know where to start and how to tell the story best to create a good plot line. I think Ms. Pace does a good job with that too. Her story starts out in the “present†when she is in the middle of a dogsled race, when she is at her lowest point. Then, she finds hope. I think that is the whole story in a nutshell. You know by reading the back of the book (or the Amazon page) everything in her life is leading up to that race. Synopsis of book description: After a crippling divorce Ms. Pace goes to live in a friend’s cabin in Alaska and falls in love with its wilderness and a man named Andy she meets there. The dogsled race is a metaphor for her life - she follows her instincts, she has a wanderlust for the outdoors and travel, she loves animals, and is fiercely independent. All those are qualities you need in dogsledding (from my personal observations from other sources and this book, not from personal experience). After the dogsled race prologue Ms. Pace goes into the past to when her adult life started - right before high school graduation. She made the choice to follow her heart. She shows how the seeds of her past life grew to fruition in dog sledding. It’s really interesting to see that unfold. Like this book shows a journey that almost seems inevitable to lead to dogsledding, and yet in her day by day life before that you would never know that was the end point. Makes me want to examine my life and say where am I going? I think the best books make you examine some topic in a new way. I will definitely look out for more books by Ms. Pace.
There’s a lot going for this memoir. There are the dogs, the exoticism of Alaska, dog-sled racing, and the wilderness experience. It’s also well written. If you’re an outdoorsy kind of person interested in dog-sledding or Alaska, it’s well worth a read. But memoirs about women coming of age like this that grip a big readership - Wild, Educated, Lab Girl - have a narrator who is flawed and faces tough odds. You always wonder if they are going to fail and lose their way for life. That kind tension is missing here because basically the narrator has her stuff together. She has a wonderful support network with loving parents. She’s talented, loves the outdoors and clearly knows what she’s doing in the wilderness. Her big mistake was falling in love with a low-life she met on a silly web site in high school. Even he doesn’t seem that bad. He’s just a low-energy dude who will go nowhere. This Much Country isn’t a page turner, but it is pleasant and upbeat.
